PORTHCAWL TOWN .... 9 CADOXTON BARRY ..... 0

THERE was more to this landslide Porthcawl Town win over a poor Cadoxton Barry side than the scoreline, writes Tony Poole.

It will go down as the night that young striker Jorge Crofts forged a niche in club history in becoming top scorer.

And he did it in style scoring five times to take his seasonal tally on to the 37-goal mark, and better by two the Phil Lyons record that had stood since 1997.

Having lost the reverse game 4-1, Porthcawl led after Jordan Marks tapped in a Hayden Lau driven fifth-minute cross.

Impish wide man Morgan Thomas engineered the next goal with Lau smashing his cross into the roof of the net.

More splendid approach work from Thomas paved the way for Adam Jones to get a second goal of the campaign.

And it became 4-0 on the half-hour mark when Lau scored again to move on to nine goals for the season.

All this and the Crofts show was still waiting in the wings.

Word had got to Crofts that the Lyons goal-scoring record was now at his mercy, and he got his side’s fifth goal.

Into the second half and Crofts drew level with Lyons on 65 minutes after Morgan Thomas played him in on goal.

The goal that beat the record stemmed from fans favourite Rob Davis being dragged down in the box.

And despite regular penalty-taker Lau being on a hat-trick, he cleared the stage for the man of the moment.

He didn’t disappoint with an assured finish making it 7-0, but more important his hat-trick goal took him one past Lyons.

But there was still time for another two goals – Daniel Howells assisting his fourth, and Andrew Fisher the swansong effort.

Needless to say the match ball ended up in the Crofts memorabilia cabinet.

But Porthcawl surprisingly lost their final game against AFC Whitchurch, 3-2, at Lock’s Lane - Andrew Fisher netting twice.

It halted a run that had seen Porthcawl win their last six games.
