CUP FINAL

-

BRIDGEND TREF .......... 0 WYNDHAM BC .............. 2

THE series of Bridgend & District League cup finals got under way last week at Penybont with Wyndham triumphing in the glittering Division Two event, writes Tony Poole.

This completed a league and cup double for Wyndham, who had beaten Llanharan and Penyfai in earlier rounds.

On a first season back in the big time, they have been the dominant force on the Division Two circuit.

However, the final proved something of a feisty affair with a player from each side sent off as the players exited the Penybont magic carpet at halftime.

Though the early exchanges stages were cagey, Wyndham had the wind in their sales once Shane Edwards scored from a corner.

That left Bridgend Tref – who play out of Newbridge Fields – to really come out of their shells and press for an equaliser.

And while a young Bridgend side possessed plenty of pace to trouble their valley opponents, the final ball into the red zone lacked real conviction.

But Wyndham needed another goal to make their Bridgend League double dream come true – and got it via Mattie Jones.

Though Bridgend Tref refused to throw in the towel and were the more accomplished side during the second period, the scoreline remained undisturbed.

However, that isn’t the end of the Wyndham campaign, as tonight (Wednesday) they take on Premier side Red Valley in the Nathaniel Cars Open Cup quarter-finals at Aber Fields.

“Wyndham had experience in vital areas, but take nothing away from a young Bridgend Tref team they battled all the way,” said newly appointed Wyndham press officer Ms Emily Phillips.

She added: “But it was a fantastic night for Wyndham at the Super Club, and the boys can reflect on an equally fantastic double.’’
