CWMAVON .................... 6 FC PORTHCAWL ........... 1

FC PORTHCAWL felt the full force that’s big guns Cwmavon during their final Premier League game of the season, writes Tony Poole.

Rest Bay chief Jon McCarthy headed west with a threadbare squad – that said they shot into an early lead.

Cwmavon, who have just completed a third title-winning campaign with an unbeaten tag, conceded a free kick that Sam McCarthy rifled in.

James Tiernan nearly doubled the lead but the Green Machine had obviously riled the champions, who turned around and showed them who was boss with four quickfire goals.

Porthcawl, who the previous week had lost the Challenge Cup Final, 2-1, to the same opponents, started the second half on the front foot.

Tiernan was once more just wide of the target while big Ben Collins struck some telling blows down the left touchline.

Captain Jordan Pugh then headed over on the end of a Dewi Owen cross, but injuries to Collins and substitute Connor Pitman then reduced the Green Machine to 10 men.

It was against the run of play that Cwmavon then made it 5-1 and a night of woe for McCarthy and his merry men ended in them leaking another goal.

And in all probability this fifth league defeat of the season will leave them in fourth spot in the final table behind Gwynfi United, runners-up Tata Steel and Cwmavon.
