ROB Atkin (Bridgend) won the opening event of this season’s Bridgend Running League programme with a victory last week in the Ogmore Castle Trail event.

His winning time was 20 minutes 36 seconds and he had 31 seconds in hand over runner-up Noel Jones ( Ogmore Phoenix Runners).

The next four finishers were also from the Bridgend club who organised the event, and these competitor­s were Andrew Hodgson 21:40, Richard Dando 21:42, Mark Emery 21:47 and Tom Wright 21:57.

Seventh place went to Sean Lewis in 22:21 from Brackla Harriers teammated Christophe­r Jeynes 22:33 with the remaining top-10 places occupied by Jamie Vanstone (Ogmore Phoenix Runners) 22:37 and Philip Welch (Bridgend) 22:39.

Top female in 18th position overall was Kate Roberts (Bridgend) in 23:01 from Melanie Williams (Brackla Harriers) 23:58 (27th), Georgina Jayne Dando 24:40 (32nd), Angharad Mason (both Bridgend) 24:55 (36th) and Gabriella Booth (Porthcawl Runners) 25:47 (46th).

The first event has left Bridgend clear leaders on 239 points and they are followed in the table by Ogmore Phoenix Runners 494, Brackla Harriers 682, Porthcawl Runners 725, Cornelly Striders 782, Pencoed Tri Club 1,128 and Pencoed Panthers 1,329.

Next month the Blackmill Run is on the agenda along with a meeting at Bryngarw Park.

Kenfig Reserve is the venue for the July run with the spotlight falling on Newbridge Fields in August.

And the curtain will come down on the Bridgend League at Rest Bay in Porthcawl on September 4.
