‘We’re going up!’
IT might be approaching the end of May, but another two football clubs last weekend recorded notable achievements, Bridgend super club Penybont.
And Llangeinor pulled off a 4-0 win over Hirwaun Sports at Rhydyfelin FC in a SWFA play-off match to gain Highadmit South Wales Alliance Division Two status.
The Windmillers have worked hard since the turn of the year to meet new criteria, and now possess a 100-seater grandstand.
However, they would dearly like to take their place on the top table as champions, and with this in mind a win last night (Tuesday) over STM Sports would have achieved the goal.
Llangeinor last month pipped Maesteg Park for the Celtic Tyres Bridgend & District League title and with it a place in the SWFA play-off matches for three places in Alliance Two.
They took an early lead through Rhys Calloway, and simply never looked back.
Ex-Betws star Lewis Bissmire then doubled the lead midway through the half, and it was 2-0 at the turnaround.
On the restart, Corey Jenkins placed the Llan Lads out of sight while in the 63rd minute Simon Lock unlocked the Hirwaun defence - and they suddenly had the key to the Alliance door.
In the other play-off games, STM Sports Old Boys nearly blew it against Nelson Cavaliers at Ynys Park in Porth.
The Old Boys led 2-0 at half time only to be dragged back to 2-2 and three late goals eventually set up a 5-2 success.
The night before in Merthyr Tydfil, AFC Wattstown won a penalty shootout, 4-1, over AFC Rumney Juniors. Wattstown led 2-0 at the break; went 3-2 down before a last-gasp goal led to them squaring matters on 3-3 after 90 minutes.
That forced extra time; it was 4-4 at the halfway point and 5-5 at the end of extra time with Wattstown victorious on penalties.
So, Llangeinor, STM Sports OB and AFC Wattstown will play alongside Vale and Llanharry in Alliance Two next winter.
