Laleston Gardening Club: The final lecture in the club’s annual programme will take place on Monday, June 11 at Cliff Cottage (Next door to Laleston Church) at the usual time of 7.30pm when Anthony Walton will give a talk entitled “Birds that visit the Garden – Part 2”. Anthony visited the club in June of last year and proved to be so popular he has been invited back to give part 2 of the talk he gave last year.

Attendance at these lectures since last October have been encouraging with a number of new faces in the audience joining the loyal band of supporters who attend virtually every lecture. The lectures will resume in October after a break for the summer months. In the meantime the committee will endeavour to arrange an interesting programme for the 2018 – 19 season, with a wide range of speakers and topics. Details will appear on the new membership cards which will be issued in September.

On Friday, May 25 the club held a very successful Curry Night at Cliff Cottage. The idea for this evening was the brain child of 3 members of the club’s Ladies Section (Sian James, Sue Ford and Linda Thomas) who coordinated the arrangements and did all the cooking for what proved to be a memorable feast of Indian Cuisine. The table settings would have done credit to any Indian Restaurant and 50 Club members and friends were treated to a choice of 5 different curries: Beef Madras, Chicken Korma, Vegetable Korma, Lamb Rogan Josh with the accompaniment of Poppadoms, Chutneys, Onion Bahjis, Vegetable Samosas, Nann Bread. This was a new venture for the club and the success of the evening exceeded all expectations, one satisfied diner suggesting the club should hold a curry evening every Friday night. When the raffle was drawn , it was fitting that Margaret Worgan, the club’s President should win the star prize as she had also contributed so much to the preparations for the evening. Paul Jones, the club’s Chairman, drew the evening to a close when he thanked everyone involved in making the evening a success and those for attending. He spoke warmly about the community spirit that exists within the club, demonstrated by these sort of events.

The next major date for your calender is Saturday, September 1 when the club will hold its annual show – Show Schedules and entry forms are available and can be collected from Cliff Cottage on Thursday and Saturday mornings between 10am - 12noon, where a warm welcome awaits.

Membership has started to increase recently, particularly amongst local allotment holders and it is hoped this will be reflected in an increase in show entries in September. Dennis Roberts who manages the club’s not for profit shop (The Cabin) has reported a welcome increase in business, particularly of sales of quality compost on offer.

Interested in Joining? Why not come to our next advertised lecture and meet some of our members. We will be happy to tell you about the benefits of joining this friendly, well established local club.
