MUMBLES A .............. 111 PORTHCAWL SECONDS ................ 242-8

THIS was a model performance by Porthcawl who impressed with bat, ball and in the field to record a comprehensive 131 run victory over Mumbles at Bishopston.

Batting first, in warm conditions, Porthcawl advanced to 63-2, Tariq Ahmad, contributing 17, when Steve Jenkins joined Tim Richards and proceeded to dominate the innings with a brilliant exhibition of stroke play. The pair advanced the score to 105 when Richards was dismissed by a sensational boundary catch for 44, which was highlighted with a six and five boundaries. Further support came from Rob Warren, as he and Jenkins put on 93 for the fourth wicket, when Jenkins was heartbreakingly adjudged lbw just two short of a well deserved century, having lashed three sixes and 13 fours in a scintillating display.

Warren was dismissed by a direct hit run out for a well constructed 33, which included four rope finders, leaving Blair Driscoll to continue the onslaught with 25 not out, 18 coming in boundaries, as the formidable innings ended on 242-7 from 40 overs. Alex Protheroe was Mumbles’ most impressive bowler with 2-38.

The hosts were always struggling in reply, the innings held together by an excellent 57 from Will Turner which contained seven eye-catching boundaries. Jamie Thomas chipped in with 21 and Thomas Barlow 11 but the rest of the batting found Porthcawl’s attack too hot to handle. Aided by four superb catches from young Steffan Flood, including one miraculous full-stretch diving catch, the visitor’s attack impressed. Paceman Driscoll led the charge with an excellent return of 4-26 from eight overs while Ian Parsons weaved his spin magic, his eight overs yielding 3-28. 15 year old Isaak Cronje also impressed with 2-30, including the prized wicket of Turner, and Tariq chipped in with 1-7.
