STEVE C Lewis shot an exceptiona­l net score of 58 to win the Nick Ellis Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday at Southerndo­wn.

His card displayed 8022-58 with his sizzling round containing 11 pars and 6 bogeys, and but for an eight on the 16th hole his score would have been even more astonishin­g.

Eight shots back came Mark Wayne Beattie with 76-10-66 (birdie on hole 13; 10 pars and seven bogeys).

An eagle on the parfive sixth hole led to M O’Sullivan getting 71-5-66 for third spot while on the same level was P Ellis 7913-66.

Scrolling further down the scoreboard, Barry J Hawkins went around in 73-4-69 (one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys), D Lewis 82-12-70, Graham R McMonagle low gross 70-0-70 (three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys), C Brown 90-20-70, Alan Rosser 81-11-70 and Jonathan Vernon 80-10-70.

Meanwhile, in a Ladies Section Extra Medal event last Sunday, victory went to Caroline Kelly with 9018-72.

She matched par four times on a consistent card to finish two shots in front of Maggie Townrow (three pars).

Amy Watkins took third place with 85-9-76 (nine pars) with best low gross scorer Emile Lewis next on the scoreboard with 84-5-79.

She birdied the 16th hole and carded seven pars together with nine bogeys only to get an eight on the home hole - with it went the chance a higher finish. the event, the morning winner was Ronan Oliver with 74-3-71.

On Bank Holiday Monday, the club staged the Junior Jubilee Cup with Elliot Watkins storming to victory with 39 Stableford points.

Birdies on the third and seventh holes along with seven pars got the job done while runner-up Sean David got 35 points (birdie on five and 11 pars).

Off an away handicap, Ethan Langley came in with 34 points and the score was matched by Ronan Oliver (two on six, two further birdies plus eight pars).

Sam Peet scored 33 points to finish two points clear of Matthew Morgan. qualifying tournament with 33 points.

Two points back came Menna Lewis and Karen Jackson-John, who got the measure on countback over Audrey Gregson and Gillian Jones.

Meanwhile, Rhiannydd Morgan lifted the Irene & Gerald Griffiths Cup with a countback 37 Stableford points from Margaret Lewis.

Third place on 33 points went to Eirwen Humphreys.

And the Bank Holiday Monday Mixed Foursomes was won by Elizabeth John and grandson Morgan John.

On the Junior scene at the Llynfi Valley club, Thomas Hedley carded the best nett score in the South Wales Boys U16 Championsh­ip last week that was staged at Glynneath.

Maesteg were also delighted that three junior members – Joseph Lewis, Thomas Hedley and Ellis Williams – all represente­d Glamorgan U16s in a fixture with Worcesters­hire. three and 15 to place alongside six pars.

Gerald Bush took third spot with 87-15-72 (eight pars) with steady Eddie D Taylor fourth via 95-22-73.

The remaining top-10 places went to golfing aficionado Michael Parker 89-16-73, Byron Cox 8512-73, Graham Gardner 96-22-74, David B FordWillia­ms 88-14-74, regimental George R Davis 101-26-75 and Brinley Thomas 101-26-75.

The Ladies Section staged the Rose Bowl on Bank Holiday Monday with Bethan Lees taking the honours with a splendid 37 Stableford points (four pars).

Gemma Fenton was runner-up on par 36 points (birdies on holes three and six together with three pars) and Heather Davies shot 33 points (four pars).

Fourth place went to Sylvia Lambe with 30 points from Melanie Williams 27 and Deidre Ralph 26.
