Porthcawl Townswomens Guild Meeting: Whoops” Due to error in communication I gave the wrong date for their next meeting in last week’s column. Start getting ready ladies!

The June meeting of the Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild is actually today Wednesday, June 13 at 2pm in All Saints Church Hall in Victoria Avenue when Mr John Hugh Thomas will give a talk about Madame Adelina Patti and her life.

She lived in Craig y Nos Castle in the Neath Valley and when started work in Swansea in 1959 the Swansea Council wer in the process of demolishing a raiway station by the side of the tawe (opposite Sainsbury’s) which was built especially for the diva herself so she could connect with the London train.

For anyone who is interested, you can Google her name and listen to recordings made around 1905 singing songs such as There’s No Place Like Home as well as more familiar operatic arias.

One thing that did surprise me when I went to see an opera in her private theatre some years ago was that there was a suit of armour on display that she had worn in a production of The Maid of Orleans and it was absolutely tiny!

Porthcawl San Sebastion Town Twinning Association: PSSTTA will be celebrating Bastille Day a little early this year: They will be gathering at The Hi-Tide in Mackworth Road on Wednesday, July 11 at 8pm.

The menu is French onion soup followed by Tarte Tatin. There will be a film on Puy de Fou
