LOCAL RUGBY ROUNDUP

MAESTEG QUINS secured their first win as a WRU Championship club over BEDDAU in the match between the two winless teams in the league.

Both sets of players would have earmarked this match for a win.

The Quins’ powerful scrummage was the backbone to victory, with Beddau opting for passive engagements with a quarter of the game remaining.

A try double from the returning Sam Mines, one from Dean, plus Owen Howe’s seventeen points haul from the tee outweighed Beddau’s tries from Tom Geere, Cody Baker and ten kicked points from Hywel Chatham. Next Saturday Quins travel to Newbridge to take on the former Merit Table club.

In Division One West Central, tries from Kristian Jenkins and Man of the `match Peter Kehoe saw MAESTEG CELTIC claim a 21-12 home win against BRYNAMMAN.

KENFIG HILL were also on the right side of the scoreline as they sealed a 13-3 away win at SKEWEN. TONDU fell to a narrow 9-5 home defeat to BONYMAEN.

PORTHCAWL kept an impressive clean sheet at home to MORRISTON as they won 17-0.

NANTYFFYLLON returned home with the spoils in a very hard physical game against SEVEN SISTERS, playing up the slope in the first half.

Nanty contained the hosts and were first to open their account with a well struck penalty by outside half Cameron Jones.

Seven drew level with along range penalty of their own before Nanty scored the only try of the half.

Nanty attacked down the right flank where Seven conceded a penalty on half way.

Scrum half Jonny Phillips took it quick and broke away and then popped up to finish the move by touching down in the corner.

Two Quick penalties by Jones at the start of the second half seemed as if Nanty were going to pull clear.

Seven had other ideas and produced a real challenge and applied attack after attack only to see Nanty defend resolutely for long periods.

Five minutes from the end Seven finally broke through with a forward drive to crash over and convert the try. Try as they might the Nanty defence stayed solid and reaped the benefit of the win.

NANTYMOEL secured a 32-21 away win against TAIBACH.

In Division Three West Central, BRIDGEND SPORTS overcame the challenge of CWMGORS with a scoreline of 35-3.

Meanwhile, PYLE had a tremendous away victory against GLAIS with a 42-point margin.

BRYNCETHIN won their home tie against PONTYCYMMER 14-5.

In Division One East Central, BRIDGEND ATHLETIC were unlucky to fall to a 10-8 home defeat against GLAMORGAN WANDERERS.

COWBRIDGE also fell to a narrow away defeat against TREHARRIS, 1512, while MAESTEG blew CARDIFF INTERNATIONALS away with a 50-3 win.
