Coytrahen Gardening: On Wednesday, November 14, from 7pm, at the Philip Squires community Centre Coytrahen the Gardening Club host An Evening with Rita Sainsbury, medical herbalist.

Making use of plants, whose traditiona­l uses are backed up by modern scientific research and clinical trials, herbalists treat the underlying cause of disease rather than just the symptoms.

Learn more about this fascinatin­g subject and join us for what promises to be a most interestin­g evening.

Coytrahen Gardening Club is open to new members.

Membership is £10 per year and visitors are always welcome with a £2 per visit fee.

Therapy Dogs: Therapy Dogs Nationwide have a South Wales Representa­tive in Ben the Poochon.

TDN is a national charity who can visit many different establishm­ents such as schools, hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, care centres, prisons as well as other voluntary organisati­ons and groups.

We are able to visit to offer therapy or to introduce our organisati­on and the work that we do.

Ben has been trained, assessed and is insured for visits and he is calm and happy to meet all sorts of ages, needs and also in all walks of life.

Grow Wild: Grow Wild UK connects people to nature and each other by funding creative and innovative ideas, focused on UK native wildflower­s plants and fungi.

Bridgend Associatio­n of Voluntary Organisati­ons (BAVO) is offering the opportunit­y for local voluntary organisati­ons and groups to meet a representa­tive from Grow Wild UK on Tuesday, October 16 from 10am-3.30pm in BAVO’s offices in Maesteg.

Community project grants of £2,000 or £4,000 are available to groups to deliver projects in their community focused on UK native wildflower­s, plants and fungi.

Youth projects funding provide young people aged 14-25 with £500 funding to do something creative and collaborat­ive, inspired by UK native plants and fungi. Funding can help young people to improve their CV or personal statement, make connection­s with their community, develop new skills and help raise awareness of nature.

Half hour appointmen­ts are available to meet a representa­tive from Grow Wild UK at BAVO.

Evening Of Clairvoyan­ce: An evening of clairvoyan­ce will be held on Thursday, November 6, at the Ynysawdre Community Centre, Bryn Road Tondu. Tickets £5.

Coity WI: Coity WI meets on the 3rd Thursday each month at 7pm-9pm.

John Sheen visited the meeting on September 20 and we discovered that his talk Five Boys and a Pasty was a stroll down memory lane for most of the members present.

We laughed a lot and were so engrossed by his reminiscen­ces that time flew. John is a very good speaker and much in demand, however, he has promised to come back again with more memories and anecdotes to warm the heart.

The next meeting will be on the Thursday, October 18 when Alison Westwood will give us a gift wrapping demonstrat­ion, particular­ly useful at this time of year.

Bridgend Quakers: On September 14, a play called The Bundle was performed at Carnegie House telling a an asylum seeker’s story by Journeymen Theatre.

This was a moving and powerful telling of a true story.

Nearly £500 was raised for Christian Aid and a charity for homeless people.

This was a joint project with Churches Together in Bridgend.

Glamorgan Family History Society: The next meeting of the Bridgend Branch of the Glamorgan Family History Society is on Monday, October 15 at the Len Evans centre, Off Heol Persondy, Aberkenfig, CF32 9RF.

The speaker will be Dean Powell who will give a talk on Dr William Price of Llantrisan­t – Wales’ first radical.

Trenchfoot Return To Green Hall: Trenchfoot the fabulous band, formed in 2014 to commemorat­e the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, and celebrate the lives of the millions who were lost, returns to Cefn’s own Green Hall, seven days before their final ever performanc­e at Swansea Grand.

Two years ago the hall was filled with toe tapping enjoyment, tears and laughter.

Join us again to remember the end of the First World War on Saturday, November 3, 7.30 pm.

Brought to the village by Cefn Gwyrdd through the Night Out Scheme, tickets are £8 and £7 each.

Community Path Clearing Squad: A group of volunteers have been busy tidying the overgrown community path from Bryngarw to Blaengarw.

The next clearing session will take place on Saturday, October 13, with everyone meeting at 10am on the path at the Braichy crossing in Pontyrhyl. The community path is a well loved and much used lifeline for Garw and the valley would be lost without it.

Any extra help would be very welcome indeed.

Garw Valley Tennis Club: Garw Valley Tennis Club will be holding their finals day on Saturday, October 13 at 10am.

Everyone is welcome and there will be free refreshmen­ts.

Parents and grandparen­ts are invited to come along and watch the children play and receive their trophies.
