Penybont gearing up for top-of-the-table showdown Stop the danger men

-

THE SEASON might be just two months old, but the top-of-the-table clash between Penybont and Haverfordwest County on Saturday is likely to have a bearing on the title race in Nathaniel Cars Welsh Football League Division One, writes Tony Poole.

The high-flying Pembrokeshire Bluebirds will land on the Kymco Stadium trailing unbeaten leaders Bont by only a point.

Both clubs have applied for FAW Tier One licences – a prerequisite to participate next season in the JD Welsh Premier League – along with Briton Ferry Llansawel and Cambrian & Clydach.

And, although just seven of the scheduled 30 league fixtures are struck off, it’s already looking as if Bont and the Bluebirds are the two best equipped sides on the circuit.

While Bont were without a fixture last weekend, Haverfordwest signalled intent in beating Ammanford, 4-0, last Friday night under the Conygar Bridge Meadow floodlights.

And two of the players who Bont will have to mark closely – much-travelled former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle and Danny Williams – were both on the scoresheet.

Trundle, who today (Wednesday) celebrates his 42nd birthday, linked up with the Bluebirds during the summer having played a huge part in Llanelli Town restoring Welsh Premier League status.

In 59 appearances for the Reds, the Swansea City ambassador and youthteam coach scored a remarkable 86 goals.

The Pembrokeshire giants are now banking on the veteran striker fulfilling a similar role for them.

Considering the fine Haverfordwest start – only losing to Cam in the league – they surprisingly parted company last month with manager Sean Cresser over differences of opinion.

Wayne Jones is back at the Bridge Meadow helm, and last season’s league runners-up will be looking to improve on a 3-1 loss at the Kymco Stadium back in April.

The Penybont goals came from Adam Carpenter, Owain Warlow and Liam Walsh - and it completed the double over the Bluebirds.

Bont had previously triumphed 2-1 at Bridge Meadow with Kane Owen and top scorer Marcus Griffiths both on target.
