A NEW shop selling mobility aids has given away a free mobility scooter at its opening in Pyle Garden Village.

Village Mobility opened its new premises inside the garden centre on Heol Mostyn, Pyle, on Saturday, October 13.

BBC weatherman Derek Brockway was in attendance at the event and announced the winner of a new mobility scooter worth £1,200.

Competition entrant Terry Davies accepted the scooter and said he would now be able to take walks with his wife Jill and their dog around Dinas Powys.

Speaking at the event, Derek Brockway spoke of his Weatherman Walking series. “For me, it’s a wonderful job to have, hiking up all those hills and dales and I do take my mobility for granted,” he said.

“For some people, it’s a difficult task when the mind is willing but the body is not so efficient.

“Modern aids like mobility scooters means the walk on the promenade at Porthcawl is not unreachable.”

Village Mobility will be based in the building that was once the original café when the garden centre opened in 1974.

In the lead up to the grand opening, people were invited to nominate someone on Facebook they feel deserves to benefit from a free scooter.

Pyle Garden Village managing director Rob James thanked Roma Medical for supplying the mobility and disability equipment.

Mr James said: “Mobility is a growing sector as we are all living longer and leading more active lives therefore the need for such products.”

Roma Medical specialise in building personalised wheelchairs for disabled athletes.

Wheelchair basketball Paralympic medallist Laurie Williams’ chair, nicknamed the Whippet, is on display at the Village Mobility showroom.
