Ynysawdre: The next full Community Council Meeting for Ynysawdre will take place on, Tuesday, February 19, 7pm at Ynysawdre Parish Hall, opposite the Cricket Club. The above meeting is open to the public. All are welcome.

Spiritual Healing: Spiritual healing is offered each Tuesday from 6pm-7.30pm at the Ynysawdre Community Centre (at the junction of Bryn Road and Heol-yrYsgol).

There is no charge for the service but a small donation to help defray expenses is appreciate­d.

Brackla Community Council: The council meet on the third Thursday of the month in the boardroom of Oak Tree Surgery, 7pm start.

Election: Brackla Community Council has an election called for Thursday, February 28 to replace a seat on the council. Polling stations are open 7am-10pm. they meet again at 7pm, on the first Thursday of the month at Carnegie House, Wyndham Street, Bridgend, where new members are always welcome.

The Circle’s annual short story competitio­n for this year is 1,5001,800 words on a theme of your choice.

Entry is £5 for a single story, £7.50 for two stories; closing date is Friday, March 1.

Prizes are £100, £50, £30 and publicatio­n on the Circle’s website.

Lions Club of Bridgend: Bridgend Lions are now collecting books in readiness for their 2019 spring book fair, as well as DVDs, CDs, jigsaws and computer games.

All donations can be handed in at the Westward Community Centre on Sundays from 10.30am-11.30am.

Please do not deliver books outside of these hours.

Books can also be delivered to Aberkenfig Welfare Hall on weekday mornings from 11am.

BRING YOUR RECYCLABLE UNIFORM

If you have any spare uniform hanging around the house, that the children have outgrown, but is still in good condition; please take the opportunit­y to give and drop it into the reception at BCLC.

Donations are now being taken at BCLC between 10am and 5pm Monday to Thursday. These generous gifts will enable as many people as possible to make use of the available uniform for the school they attend.

Following items are needed:

Any uniform items for the above schools (shirts, jumpers, trousers, skirts, etc.), coats to fit school age children, dark flat shoes, school bags, PE kits, football and rugby boots, shirts and shorts.

All items to be clean and in good condition, please.

Hawaiian Day: On Saturday, February 9, Pontycymer Rugby Club will be holding a player’s Hawaiian day and night. All past and present players are invited to join in the fun, with doors opening at 12.30pm. The Italy v Wales Six Nations match will be shown live on the big screen, kicking off at 4.45pm. Hawaiian shirts are compulsory.

Valley Ravens: On Sunday, January 27, the Valley Ravens mini and junior rugby section hosted a mini festival at Lawrence Park, Pontycymer. Athletic Club Runners: Residents are concerned that many runners are training in the darkness around the roads of Heol y Bardd, Greenfield­s, Park Court Road, etc. without wearing any fluorescen­t apparel. Other road users fear an accident will occur if this practice continues, particular­ly at busy junctions.

80th Birthday: Congratula­tions and best wishes to Yvonne Hitchins, an extremely smart lady and excellent dancer who will be 80 years young on Tuesday, February 19. Yvonne loves socialisin­g, shopping and leads a keep fit class for the elderly. She is celebratin­g this milestone on a cruise with her family and no doubt parties galore. Wishing you many more birthdays Yvonne from all your line dancing friends at the United Reform Church. Enjoy!

Laleston Church Hall Consultati­on Meeting: People and Places grant – National Lottery Fund.

The St David’s Church Hall Developmen­t Committee, Laleston are applying to the above fund for a grant to alter and refurbish the Church Hall on the High Street.

We would value your thoughts, opinions and suggestion­s about its future use after its refurbishm­ent so that we can include them in our applicatio­n.

If you are able to contribute to this consultati­on, please come along to the Church Hall on the main road in Laleston on Monday, February 18 between 7.30pm and 9pm to meet with members of the project group. Light refreshmen­ts will be available.

Laleston Gardening Club: Members are reminded that the next lecture of the current season takes place at Cliff Cottage in Laleston on Monday, February 11 at the usual time of 7.30pm. Dan Lock was due to give a talk entitled “Gardening for Wildlife”, but due to unforeseen circumstan­ces has had to cancel.

The club is pleased that Keith Douglas has agreed to step in and give a talk on “Bryngarw Country Park” where he has been employed for many years.

Comprising of 113 acres Bryngarw is situated at the bottom of the Garw Valley and its woodland area, wild meadow, ponds, lake and Japanese Garden are well worth a visit. Several members of Laleston Gardening Club are volunteers at Bryngarw. This will be Keith’s first visit to the club and he is assured of a warm welcome.

On January 14 the ever popular Kevin Thomas visited the club to give a talk entitled “12 Months in the Small Greenhouse”.

This proved to be a great success with virtually every seat taken. A number of new members enrolled on the night and were well pleased with the warm welcome they received.

The club is witnessing a resurgence of interest in gardening and club membership is increasing on a weekly basis.

The club’s not for profit shop (The Cabin) was scheduled to reopen on Saturday, February 2 after the winter break. Dennis Roberts the shop manager is in the process of restocking the Cabin in readiness for the new season and members will be able to find most of what they need under one roof. The Cabin is is open every Thursday and Saturday morning between 10am and 12noon and potential new members are always welcome.

Plans for a Chinese evening to be held on Friday, February 8 are well in hand. This is designed to welcome in the Chinese New Year and follows the success of the curry night the club held last May.

The Club’s ladies section are the heartbeat of the club’s fundraisin­g activities and are always looking to try new ideas and make full use of the club’s facilities, including its impressive new kitchen facilities that will soon include a new double oven cooker with fan oven, that will be installed in time for the Chinese evening.
