Kane shows he’s able!

-

PENYBONT defender Kane Owen is enjoying success on two fronts this season, writes Tony Poole.

With the Bridgend super club in the midst of a quest to become the first side in 11 seasons to record a league and cup double on the Welsh League circuit, the much-travelled left-back from Port Talbot has played a significant role in University of South Wales (USW) reaching the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Cup Final.

Owen, aged 24, had taken in spells with Cardiff City and Afan Lido before player manager Rhys Griffiths brought him to The Kymco Stadium from Aberystwyth Town during the summer of 2016.

However, this season he’s also USW captain, and last week they gained an eye-catching 3-2 home victory over old rivals Cardiff Metropolitan University to reach the BUCS Cup Final.

The victory was all the sweeter, as over the past two seasons USW had been eliminated by the Welsh Premiership team.

USW did the damage early on with Liam Edwards giving them a third-minute lead. And soon after Owen converted a penalty after ex-Bridgend College student Cameron Keetch had been taken out in the box.

A superb Clayton Green strike made it 3-0 at the break and though Cardiff Met rallied with goals from Matt Neill and Gwion Howell, USW went on to gain a famous victory.
