Coychurch WI’s August Day Out: On 6th August, 33 members boarded the coach for their annual summer trip; this year our destination was in beautiful west Wales to Cwm Deri Vineyard, Martlewy, near Narberth. En - route we stopped in Carmarthen for a welcome coffee and for some retail therapy was inevitable.

On arrival we made our way to the conservatory with magnificent views over the open countryside and where lunch would be served. The lunch consisted of a choice of three meats with an abundance of homegrown salads, chutneys, potatoes and the most delicious home-made breads. There was a choice of three delicious desserts. Whilst enjoying our lunch we were served various tastings of wines, liqueurs, gins and non-alcoholic drinks; something to suit all palates.

Following lunch and before departure you could wander around the vineyard and visit the shop where there were numerous cheeses, chutneys, preserves, gifts and of course wines and spirits available to purchase.

Everyone had a very pleasant day out and thanks were conveyed to Sandra Davidson for organising the event.

We re-commence our monthly meetings on 3rd September at 7.30pm in the Williams Memorial Hall and the guest speaker Mr. Sheen’s topic will be “The Happiest Days”. Guests and prospective members are very welcome to come along.

Laleston Gardening Club: The Chairman and Committee are pleased to remind members and

the public that the club’s 49th Annual Horticultural Show and Barbecue takes place on Saturday, September 7 at Cliff Cottage in Laleston.

Show schedules have been available for some time and it is hoped that members will support the show.

With an abundance of entries on the show benches the show secretaries Pauline Sloan and Joyce Pegg, supported by the committee will work hard to make the necessary preparations.

The show can only be a success if it is supported by the clubs members.

There are currently 185 members of Laleston Gardening Club, which is the highest for 10 years, so it is hoped there will be a bumper entry.

All exhibitors should be members of the club, but its important to note that anyone can join on the day and this will entitle them to submit their entries. There will be classes for: vegetables, flowers, flower arranging, baking and preserves, arts and crafts, photography, children and families.

The Children and Families section has been given extra publicity in the hope it will attract more entries this year.

Exhibits can be staged on the Friday evening and before 12 noon on Saturday, September 7.

Judging starts at 12.15pm and the show opens at 2pm.

There will be a barbecue, refreshments, tombola, craft stalls and the customary auction of produce at the end of the afternoon when the show secretary, Pauline Sloan, will provide the entertainment with her own brand of humour!

The show is the occasion when annual membership is renewed, and the new membership card will give details of the forthcoming lecture programme. The £5 annual subscription helps towards the cost of running, maintaining and improving a grade II listed building.

New members are also most welcome to join on the day of the show. Anyone with an interest in gardening will receive a warm welcome, meet like minded people and hopefully make new friends.

The last of the club’s three summer trips took place on Saturday, August 3, when members enjoyed a day out at Spetchley Park Gardens, Worcester.

This followed a trip to the Brecon Railway on June 8 and a visit to Dyffryn Fernant Gardens, Fishguard on July 6.

The club are indebted to Margaret Worgan, the club President, who single handedly researched and organised the 3 trips, even ensuring good weather!

Margaret has been organising these trips for many years and it was noted at a recent committee meeting that the club had been on 63 of Margaret’s outings since the year 2000.

Thank you Margaret and well done, what an achievement.

Why not come to our next advertised lecture or event and meet some of our members.

We will be happy to tell you about the benefits of joining this friendly, well established local club.

● National Coastwatch Institution - Porthcawl: July was another busy month for the Porthcawl Branch, with 14 logged and 29 monitored incidents recorded.

This matches the number of incidents recorded in July 2018, but monitored incidents have increased by 9 from this time last year. Recorded incidents ranged from missing persons, to overdue swimmers and from “tombstoners” to dinghies adrift. This means July 2019 was the busiest month since the station opened. July was also a record month for logged vessels, with 1787 recorded movements. Interestingly, 85% of these were related to leisure.

Up until this month the Branch has recorded 57 incidents for the year - 10 more than this time in 2018.This makes them one of the busiest National Coastwatch stations in the UK.

The innovative and state of the art CCTV system employed in the tower helps them achieve this, with an unparalleled level of coverage over the local coastline.

Rarely are there any quiet watches during the Summer!

The Branch also wants to thank everyone who continues to support them and especially for the excellent response to their stand at Rescue Fest 2019.

The tower is 149 years old this year and the Branch members hope to celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary next year in appropriate fashion.
