Pur... Fect Anniversary: This was an anniversary (albeit not a Golden one) with a difference when a couple from Broadlands recently spent a night in a very up-market hotel outside Bridgend and were joined by a cat who jumped in through the window!!

Laleston Gardening Club: The Chairman and Committee are pleased to remind members and the public that the club’s 49th Annual Horticultural Show and Barbecue takes place on Saturday, September 7 at Cliff Cottage in Laleston.

Show schedules have been available for some time and it is hoped that members will support the show.

With an abundance of entries on the show benches the show secretaries Pauline Sloan and Joyce Pegg, supported by the committee will work hard to make the necessary preparations.

The show can only be a success if it is supported by the clubs members.

There are currently 185 members of Laleston Gardening Club, which is the highest for 10 years, so it is hoped there will be a bumper entry.

All exhibitors should be members of the club, but its important to note that anyone can join on the day and this will entitle them to submit their entries.

There will be classes for: vegetables, flowers, flower arranging, baking and preserves, arts and crafts, photograph, children and families. The Children and Families section has been given extra publicity in the hope it will attract more entries this year.

Exhibits can be staged on the Friday evening and before 12 noon on Saturday, September 7.

Judging starts at 12.15pm and the show opens at 2pm.

There will be a barbecue, refreshments, tombola, craft stalls and the customary auction of produce at the end of the afternoon when the show secretary, Pauline Sloan, will provide the entertainment with her own brand of humour!

The show is the occasion when annual membership is renewed, and the new membership card will give details of the forthcoming lecture programme. The £5 annual subscription helps towards the cost of running, maintaining and improving a grade II listed building. New members are also most welcome to join on the day of the show.

Anyone with an interest in gardening will receive a warm welcome, meet like minded people and hopefully make new friends.

The last of the club’s 3 annual summer trips took place on Saturday, August 3, when members enjoyed a day out at Spetchley Park Gardens, Worcester. This followed a trip to the Brecon Railway on June 8 and a visit to Dyffryn Fernant Gardens, Fishguard on July 6. The club are indebted to Margaret Worgan, the club President, who single handedly researched and organised the 3 trips, even ensuring good weather! Margaret has been organising these trips for many years and it was noted at a recent committee meeting that the club had been on 63 of Margaret’s outings since the year 2000.

Thank you Margaret and well done, what an achievement.

Why not come to our next advertised lecture or event and meet some of our members.

We will be happy to tell you about the benefits of joining this friendly, well established local club.

Condolences: Sincere condolences to the family of a dear friend Derek Lyddon who passed away peacefully on August 21 after bravely struggling with ill health for some time.

The Committal service took place at Coychurch Crematorium followed by a wonderful service to celebrate his life at Hope Chapel Bridgend which was attended by hundreds of Derek’s many friends. He had so many attributes....he was a talented hairdresser from a young age, fun-loving, smart, generous, kind and a true gentleman. Derek will be dearly missed by all who knew him but not forgotten.
