PORTHCAWL

- David Newton-Williams

St Tyfodwg’s Church Glynogwr: Tyfodwg’s stands on the uplands of Glamorgan and is situated in the village of Glynogwr on the south side of the A4093, approximately halfway between Blackmill and Gilfach Goch. It is an ancient 12th Century Grade II* listed building, which contains a treasured monument called “Pilgrim Stone” said to be an effigy of St Tyfodwg.

The sad but simple truth is that St Tyfodwg’s is no longer financially viable, the traditional methods of funding by the weekly collection is no longer proving sufficient to meet the needs of the Church.

It is also no longer equipped or designed to cater for the wider range of activities in which the Church of today is involved as part of its wider mission. If it is to thrive it will need to secure new sources of revenue and redefine its space in ways that enable it to function, both now and into the future.

The plans therefore are to create a space that can have a variety of uses in addition to a Christian Place of Worship.

In order to achieve a fund-raising project has begun to install a kitchen and disability toilet together with a meeting area. St Tyfodwg’s role within the local community can be redefined through its provision of vital local services and by being a point of connection that re-establishes it at the Heart of local life.

ITSOKTOTALK: I wonder how many of you have seen the van with the ANDYSMANCLUB logo on it and wondered what on earth it was all about?

Andy’s Man Club is a Registered Charity which provides a peer to peer support group for men with the aim of cutting the tragic number of suicides of young men occurring in England and Wales.

This is the biggest killer of men under 45 with 1 man every 2 hours being the figure quoted.

A lot of these cases might be avoided if people only had an opportunity to talk to others who could understand what they were going through, well the opportunity does exist here in Porthcawl with a group meeting in Porthcawl RFC off South Road (CF36 3DA) every Monday evening (Except Bank Holidays). Or check out their website or talk to them on #ITSOKTOTALK

Gilgal would like to thank everyone who contributes to this scheme for their efforts and gifts of filled pencil cases and stationery as well as cuddly toys to ensure that every child gets a present to help make their Christmas special.

Faith In Human Nature: As part of my recent 90th birthday present, I was given two tickets for the Wales England match in Cardiff so that I could take Dan, my youngest son to his first International Test Match. We took our seats early to savour the atmosphere of a match with the ’old enemy’ and I found myself sitting next to a young man who turned out to be an English/New Zealand cross. Charming, genuine and eager to talk- he soon found out my age and we talked about matches in the Stadium and in The Arms Park before that, then I mentioned that my brother and I had taken my father who was in his mid eighties at the time to a match in Llanelli in 1972 when, as someone once said ‘the gods smiled on the Scarlets.’and Llanelli beat the All Blacks 9-3 and the pubs ran dry. I said that it was a day I would never ever forget: at which point he said to Dan. ‘I’ll give you a day to remember and asked for our e-mail address. ’ I’m going to send you two tickets for the Irish game in Cardiff on the 31st–all I ask is that you make a similar gesture in the future when you can afford it to someone you havn’t yet met to give them a memory that they can cherish in their old age’. I can’t say that he vanished in ‘a puff of smoke’; but he did leave before the end –we shook hands and he was gone.

The cynical amongst you, might say ‘scam’but on the way home I received a message on my phone to say that he had bought the tickets and that I would have them on the following Monday. Monday came and so did the tickets. So there are nice people out there and yes we will be there and neither Dan nor I will ever forget Richard and his act of generosity!
