Riders cook up a storm

-

CEFN Cribwr pulled off the outstanding result in a preliminary round Welsh Cuptie with a 3-1 home win over Ynysygerwn, writes Tony Poole.

It was the second consecutive time for the Riders to eliminate the Welsh League club; last year they triumphed 3-2 at Llandarcy Park.

Though Ynys led through a Ryan Morris strike at the break, Jonny Tiffin levelled in the 53rd minute and late on he gave them the lead. And, during time added on, Tom Harris netted while Matt Symons was handed man-of-the-match honours.

Vale United entered the competition for a first time and gained a 2-1 victory over Treforest at White Tips with Jay Tominey and captain Mark Williams the goal-scoring heroes.

However, Pencoed Athletic were taken to penalties by Premier rivals Trebanog at Felindre Road, the tie ended 2-2 at 90 minutes and extra time.

Goals from Sully Sports imports Darren Townsend and Nathan Fletcher-Williams twice brought a response from gritty Trebanog.

But Pencoed then won on penalties, 4-2, thanks to Kyle Owen, Richie Lewis, Thomas Powell and Fletcher-Williams.

In the Premier Division, Porthcawl Town responded to a 4-0 midweek loss against Pencoed with a 5-1 win over Grange Albion at Lock’s Lane.

Though the capital city side led against the run of play, a superb Evan Jones strike made it 1-1 at the changeover.

But the Seasiders then swam with the tide, Joe McCarthy converting a penalty to give them the lead, and they rounded things off with two goals from Bradley Clarke and a Sam Comley strike.

And Caerau, who are set to give Luke Cox a league debut on Saturday at Baglan Dragons, won for a first time.

The Riverboaters gained a 3-1 win over Garw at Blandy with manager Nigel Jordan parading new signing Olly Edwards.

Tom Davies gave Caerau a 16th-minute lead; Robbie Walters converted a penalty and netted on 70 minutes while Garw replied with a late penalty.

In Division Two, unbeaten leaders Maesteg Park made it five home wins from as many starts with a 4-0 victory over AFC Wattstown.

An early Lloyd Williams goal gave the Park Arabs a half-time advantage, while on the resumption Kai Steadman drilled home a free-kick. The visitors then had a man sent off, allowing Park to score further goals from Steffan Roberts and Jordan Tremlett to leave them in good shape for a swift rematch on Saturday at AFC Wattstown.
