Mum horrified after finding syringe in supermarket toilets

A MUM was left horrified after finding a used syringe near a babychanging table in a supermarket toilet.

Cassie Leggett was shopping with her partner at Asda in Bridgend on Wednesday when she came across the syringe on the side of the sink in the disabled toilet.

She said the syringe appeared to have been used and had a needle attached and was in the same toilet cubicle as the baby-changing area.

Now she’s warning other shoppers to take care when using the toilets, especially parents with young children and those with disabilities.

Ms Leggett, 30, said: “Not only is it the disabled toilet but it is the babychanging area.

“I know most parents are very observant but it takes less than a second for a little one to reach out and grab something, having potentially catastrophic injuries.

“I managed to call over another customer who reported it to the cafe, who then got hold of security.

“I stayed by the door until security attended, as obviously I didn’t want to leave the area unattended.

“It only takes a second for a young child or vulnerable person to touch something they are intrigued by.”

Ms Leggett shops at the supermarket on Coychurch Road three times a week with her family.

As a residential care worker for children with complex additional needs, she also often visits with children so they can learn life skills.

“Whether it was a drug user or someone who is prescribed an injection, it is irresponsible and something needs to be done to manage and control the use and disposal of sharps,” she said.

“To leave something so carelessly and having little regard for anyone else’s welfare is frightening.

“People need to take responsibility for their actions.”

A spokesman for Asda said: “We’d like to thank Ms Leggett for bringing this to our attention and we are pleased that our colleagues acted quickly to close off the toilet.

“We have clear policies in place to ensure our toilets are cleaned and checked regularly for our customers to use, but we would like to apologise for the inconvenience this incident caused.”
