supporters, who on the weekend of the 21st September, will be traveling to Weston Super Mare for an extended end of season tour.

Valley Ravens: On Sunday, September 8, the Valley Ravens mini section played their first home game of the 2019/20 season, welcoming many clubs from South Wales to a sunny Ogmore Park.

Before the games began, the Valley Ravens held a minute’s silence in honour of former Ogmore Vale chairman Leighton Williams, who sadly passed away during the summer months.

The Valley Ravens under 7’s, 8’s, and 9’s showed great skill sets, with many youngsters putting in eye catching displays.

On the same day, the Valley Ravens under 13s travelled to Croft Goch to face a strong Kenfig Hill side.

Again there were plenty of signs of encouragement in another hard fought game.

“Two Clubs, Two Valleys, One Valley Ravens.”

Special Birthday: Belated Best Wishes to a dear lady namely Mrs Ursula James who attained her 95th Birthday on September 9.

Sadly she was in the Princess of Wales at that time but nevertheless she was surrounded by dozens of birthday cards from her family and many friends and tended by the caring nursing staff therein.

Mrs James who is a joy to chat with and is as ‘bright as a button’ resided at Heol y Frenhines, West House Estate, for some 60 years but is now enjoying her ‘retirement’ years at Bryn y Cae Home, Brackla.

Truly an amazing lady we wish her well!

Laleston Gardening Club: The club’s 49th Annual Horticultural Show and BBQ took place on Saturday, September 7 and the organisers have declared it to be a complete success.

The weather stayed fine all day and the Bridgend District Scouts Explorer Unit arrived at 8am to erect the marquee on the lawn in front of Cliff Cottage.

This they did with with their usual expertise and the committee are extremely grateful for the invaluable help it gets from these enthusiastic young people and their leaders.

They also returned after the show to dismantle the marquee and help with the clean up operation.

The show secretaries, Pauline Sloan and Joyce Pegg, were well pleased that 63 exhibitors had staged 493 entries and Pauline commented that this was the highest number of entries since she became show secretary in 2010.

This increased level of participation bodes well for the 50th show next year which will of course be a special event for the club.

Sian James submitted an amazing 83 entries across all sections of the schedule and this massive contribution resulted in her winning 9 of the trophies on offer.

Paul Jones, the club chairman, presented the trophies and thanked everyone who had contributed to the success of the show, particularly those people who had supported the show with exhibits on the show benches and the committee and members who worked hard to make the show a success.

Sian received the following trophies:

Vegetables(root and bulb) - The Trotman Rose Bowl

Other Fruit and Vegetables - The Keith Robbins Shield

Biggest and Best - The Barclays Bank Trophy

Cut Flowers - The Mike Thomas Cup

Pot Plants - The Ken Freeland Trophy

The remaining trophies were awarded to:

In the children and family section:

Fin Goodwin won 1st Prize with his impressive scarecrow

Tilly Goodwin, Daniel and Ruby De Benedictus all won medals in the section Animals Made From Vegetables

The presentation of the excellent raffle prizes proceeded the auction of all the produce left on the show benches.

Despite having worked tirelessly all day with her duties as show secretary, together with Joyce Pegg, Pauline still had the energy to take centre stage and entertain everyone with her own auctioneering style, well done and thanks.

As ever there was a happy atmosphere at Cliff Cottage with visitors to the show enjoying the exhibits, partaking of refreshments and enjoying popular Welsh Cakes in the marquee or alfresco dining with burgers and sausages from the BBQ, expertly cooked by Gavin Thomas and Richard Pegg supported by Alan James.

St Tyfodwg’s Church Glynogwr: Tyfodwg’s stands on the uplands of Glamorgan and is situated in the village of Glynogwr on the south side of the A4093, approximately halfway between Blackmill and Gilfach Goch. It is an ancient 12th Century Grade II* listed building, which contains a treasured monument called “Pilgrim Stone” said to be an effigy of St Tyfodwg.

The sad but simple truth is that St Tyfodwg’s is no longer financially viable, the traditional methods of funding by the weekly collection is no longer proving sufficient to meet the needs of the Church.

It is also no longer equipped or designed to cater for the wider range of activities in which the Church of today is involved as part of its wider mission.

If it is to thrive it will need to secure new sources of revenue and redefine its space in ways that enable it to function, both now and into the future.

The plans therefore are to create a space that can have a variety of uses in addition to a Christian Place of Worship.

In order to achieve a fund-raising project has begun to install a kitchen and disability toilet together with a meeting area. St Tyfodwg’s role within the local community can be redefined through its provision of vital local services and by being a point of connection that re-establishes it at the Heart of local life.
