Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild News: After their August break the PTG is back to their usual monthly meeting.

Chairman Freda told members that the Porthcawl Branch was now rejoining the Swansea Federation as the Cardiff Federation had disbanded.

She went on to say that she was pleased to tell members this as when the Branch was started over 60 years ago they were members of the Swansea federation who were glad to welcome Porthcawl back. In September PWG always celebrate Harvest with a good tea but before that started Mrs Pat Richards gave members an interesting talk all about “Tea” - it’s history, culture and social habits.

Also Mrs Judith Shawe from the Food Bank told members about how it is run and organised and needed more and more by many people. Instead of the usual Harvest stall members brought items for the food bank and they were much appreciated.

The next meeting is on Wednesday, October 9 from 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when there will be a craft afternoon. Visitors will be welcome to come and try their hand at something new. Contact Dorothy Thomas on 01656 772 157.

Porthcawl Male Choir: This year Porthcawl Male Choir held their Annual Celebrity Concert last Saturday, when the well up to strength choir under their long time musical director Mair Jones presented a well rounded programme to a packed and appreciative audience in The Grand Pavilion.

The Mayor of BCBC, Councillor Stuart Baldwin and the Deputy Mayor of Porthcawl, Councillor Brian Jones were present and the whole evening was ably compered by past mayor Councillor Lorrie DesmondWilliams.

The choir was joined on the night by an extremely versatile and talented guest quartet called Ida who brought with them a fascinating selection of operatic arias, charttopping hits and musical theatre favourites.

This time one of the first basses was missingthere was somebody in his place but it wasn’t Brian; and it was only after the show that I heard that he had passed away some months ago.

Brian Whitehead was a lovely quiet gentle man with a good bass voice and if you are wondering if you knew him, he was the polite silver haired gentleman who in his latter years served behind the counter in the Co-op and had a kind word and a pleasant approach to each and every customer.

He will be well missed in the town and in the choir and I would like to send our condolences to his wife Mair.

To those of you who missed the concert you have another chance to catch up with the choir when they put on a Charity Concert in aid of LATCH at All Saint’s Church in Victoria Avenue on Saturday, October 5t when they are joined by Polperro Fisherman’s Choir.
