Politicians’ contempt for the electorate

- BM Granville Cornelly

MEMBERS of Parliament seem to have forgotten that the decision to hold a referendum was made by Parliament.

The MPs said this was the people’s decision and Parliament would implement what the people decided. The referendum was the largest democratic exercise this country has ever undergone. The British people voted to leave the EU in good faith but MPs were outraged by being outvoted by people they consider to be their inferiors and behaved deplorably to try to reverse the British people’s decision – an act of treachery.

The point of Brexit is to recover our freedom and democracy but MPs have betrayed the electorate to further their own personal agenda and to hell with the 17.4 million people that voted to leave the EU.

More than three years after the vote we remain shackled to the EU. We do not need this EU pantomime; Britain has stood on its own for hundreds of years and must say good-bye to the sanctimonious unelected elite of the EU that regards the British electorate as easy to ignore.

MPs are to blame for the shambles of Brexit; they should have abided by the referendum result and worked together for the benefit of our nation. MPs should beware of what they have unleashed. Many people are saying they will not vote again but that is not the answer. People should use their vote to rid us of the lying MPs and AMs who have abandoned their constituents and manifesto commitments. Should we have a re-run of every election so that the losers can try to get the result they want? There is no hope for democracy if minority voting prevails.

Wales voted to leave the EU yet out of 60 AMs in the Welsh Assembly only 11 voted to leave. As AMs and MPs they are supposed to reflect the will of the people. They will be held accountable at the ballot box for showing contempt for the people who voted in good faith.
