P&K youngsters on their way to Portugal

-

PYLE & Kenfig Juniors will next February head for Portugal to again compete in the Home Nations Championship, writes Tony Poole.

Down the years, the Kenfig-based club has regularly participated in the event, and a fine performance in Builth Wells last week in the Inter-Club Championship once more stamped their passport to fly to Portugal during the school half-term break.

But it didn’t end there, as the following day they rounded off a superb week in lifting the Glamorgan Team Championship at Royal Porthcawl.

This victory was down to Callum Hook, Ethan Langley, Jordan Oliver, Elin Tynan along with brothers Sam and Tom Peet.

Earlier, a victory over Maesteg at Royal Porthcawl in the regional InterClub Championship final punched their ticket through to Builth Wells, and they finished runners-up to

Wrexham with the North Wales club in Llandudno getting the third Welsh ticket to fly to Portugal.

The medal competition involved seven clubs, comprising six players with Bobby Jenkins of the Milford Haven club triumphant on six-under par 60 from Dylan Jones (Wrexham) 61 and Thomas Edwards (Builth Wells) 63.

Highest placed P & K competitor was fourth-placed Sam Peet, who shot a two-under par 64, while young Elin Tynan also went under the card with a one-under par score of 65 to secure fifth spot.

And a second-place finish in the tournament was confirmed by Callum Hook 67 (tied ninth), Tom Peet 70 (tied 21st) along with Jordan Oliver and Ethan Langley, who both signed for 72 to end up in a tie for 25 th position.

This fine display from a talented group of young golfers rounded off a good month for P & K because they were were also officially crowned Premier Division champions at the Glamorgan County GU annual dinner that was staged at the Marriott Hotel in the Welsh capital.

David Phillips stepped up to receive the silverware off Glamorgan Country GU chairman Martin Price to round off a memorable season for the top golfers at the club.

P & K also played their part in Glamorgan again winning The Wessex League during a dramatic climax in the final fixture between Gwent and Gloucestershire at The Woodlake Park club near Usk.

Any one of the four participating counties could have won the title, and in a tight match that could have gone either way Gwent triumphed, 7.5 – 4.5.

It enabled Glamorgan to be crowned Wessex League champions ahead of Gloucestershire.
