JUNIOR EUROPEAN OPEN

S

OUTHERNDOWN starlet Brodi Lewis played fine golf during difficult conditions in the Junior European Open that Sky Sports sponsored last month at Alcaidesa Golf in Spain, writes

Tony Poole.

The 27th staging of the event was contested by 108 boys and 45 girls under the age of 18 with Sky Sports presenter Nick Dougherty the ambassador.

It’s regarded as the toughest test in junior ranks and considering young Lewis has another five years to go at the event, he was more than satisfied to make the halfway cut.

It came on 162 shots and in windy conditions out on the golf course, he made it after signing for rounds of 83 and 79, and went on to shoot a closing 82 for a 244 finish.

Joseph Buenfeld of the Parkstone club in Dorset was triumphant with a score of 212 via rounds of 72, 69, 71 while runner-up Reis Suart (Welwyn Garden Golf Club) matched the score.

SOUTHERNDOWN

DAVE Alexander and Ben McAndrew shot 48 Stableford points to win a Fourball Betterball Pairs competition at Southerndown.

Rare dry November weather led to some decent scorecards being handed in with Alexander and McAndrew pulling off a four-shot victory over Mark Beattie and Jonny Vernon.

Also on 44 points were thirdplaced Rhys Thomas and Mark Tweed, who finished a point in front of Jack Hayes and Geraint Matthews.

MAESTEG

CARDING the only two of the day led to Morgan John running up 40 points to win the November Pro-Shop Stableford event at Maesteg.

However, he still needed countback to get the measure of Steve Gillett while third-placed Daniel Binding was three points back.

And there was another win last week for John Richmond in the Senior Section Stableford event, this time around 38 points got the job done.

Runner-up Ronnie Beynon signed for 34 points to finish a point to the good over Norman Cartlidge. The nine-hole event went to Keith Lewis courtesy of a 19-point return.

Finally, Bryan Cain lifted the Senior Autumn Cup; Chris Thomas picked up Senior Past Captain’s silverware while there was a tie at the top of the Senior Eclectic chart involving Ronald Talbot and Christopher Hopkins.

COED-Y-MWSTWR

CRAIG Jean-Baptiste ran up a splendid score of 45 Stableford points to win a November Stableford event at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

A birdie on the uphill 14th hole was the highlight on the card of the 13-handicapper, and it enhanced 12 pars and five bogeys.

The victory was by two points over Simon Lake, who eagled the third hole and went birdie on holes 12 and 16.

The remainder of his 43-point card contained eight pars and seven bogeys while third-placed Stephen Watts entered the Samuel Bevan lounge with 42 points (14 pars and four bogeys).

Senior Section star R T Commander shot a commanding 40 points on a 17-hole scoring card that displayed a two on hole four, birdie on hole three together with 10 pars and five bogeys.

They were followed on the scoreboard by 37-point man Sean BogaLake (one birdie, 12 pars and five bogeys) while on the same level came four other men – Elliot Williams, Ross Haskins, Steve Turner and Julian Rudd.

Par rounds of 36 were then carded by Josh Hapgood, Lee Reed, Paul Edwards, Jonny Witts, Michael Jacques and Vincent Harding.

The highlight in 16 twos saw Rory O’Connell go Tutu on holes four and eight while powerful Dave Watts did likewise on the 11th and 17th greens.

On the Senior scene at Bryn Road, Phil Davies last week ruled the roost in a November Winter Rules Medal, shooting 83-16-67 courtesy of a birdie on hole six, four pars and 13 bogeys.

He had two shots in hand over heavyweight hitter Rocky Raybould 83-14-69 (two on hole two, four pars and 13 bogeys) while in the same bracket came Peter Ashman 89-2069.

Former Bridgend Town footballer Chris Williams went around in 98-2870, and was followed on the scoreboard by David B Ford-Williams 9119-72, Frank Button 88-15-73, Terrence Hunt 104-29-75, Michael Parker 92-17-75, William Jones 9722-75 and Eifion Evans 92-16-76 (two on 11 th hole).

GROVE

THE summer season at The Grove was recalled during a gala Presentation Evening that saw winners officially receive their silverware.

In a well-supported event, outgoing captains Richard Bennett and Roni Emlyn-Jones thanked members for unstinting support throughout the year.

Once more the Children’s Ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend was the chosen charity for the Men’s Section while the Ladies went for Velindre Hospital in Cardiff.

However, incoming captains – Lyn Parker and Bethan Lees – have opted to join forces this time around with their choice Morgannwg Endeavour Charitable Trust, who provide a local dialysis service.

Pride of place during the presentation ceremony were the awards made to the three champion golfers at the South Cornelly club.

Meanwhile, out on the golf course, Edwin Channell won the sixth leg of the winter-long Leon Warne Order of Merit competition.

After a long break in action, brought about by a wet autumn, Channell swam with the tide to card a winning score of 33 Stableford points.

Former Porthcawl Town cricketer Norman Rand was next best with 32 points, and he edged out Phil Evans on countback.

Fourth place went to Martin Evans, who exited the golf course with 31 points.

Three twos were recorded on the day, and they were on the cards of Kevin Budge, Kenneth Godwin and Vincent Laing.

Finally, the Senior Section staged a fourth Turkey Trot leg with victory on this occasion going to John Green, who hit a colourful 32 Stableford points.

The victory was by two points over Paul Hyder, who triumphed in Turkey leg two, and with just one remaining leg the heat is being turned up on the race for the plump turkey.

ST MARY’S

IT remained dry enough for St Mary’s Senior Section to stage two competitions during late November.

Bob Coombes, Trefor Jones and Michael Tayler triumphed in a 12hole team Stableford event, running up 59 points.

And in a Stableford competition that was contested over 17 holes, victory went to Malcolm Jones on countback 38 points over Trefor Jones.

Another player to go under the card on the day was third-placed Gareth Thomas, who entered the clubhouse with 36 points.

LAKESIDE

FUND-RAISING events during his year as captain of the Lakeside in Margam resulted in Cliff Richards last month presenting a cheque to Survivors of Strokes Wales.

During a handover ceremony, he gave a cheque for £450 to the charity’s representative William Nedin.

Survivors of Strokes Wales provide vital aftercare and equipment to stroke patients once they leave hospital.

Away days to other golf courses in South Wales proved a lucrative Lakeside fund-raising source.
