Blackmill Over-50s: Blackmill Over-50s meet at the Local Community Centre on Wednesday evenings at 7pm, always glad to welcome new members.

This is a social gathering and occasional­ly a trip to the theatre or a meal out is arranged.

Nantymoel Knitters:

We meet twice a week at Dinam Close every Tuesday and Friday from 10am-noon.

We are always looking for new members and all our efforts are to make things for charity.

BAVO: Administer­ed by Bridgend Associatio­n of Voluntary Organisati­ons ( BAVO) grants may be awarded for capital or revenue up to the maximum of £3,000 pounds for community group in Penyfai,

Wildmill and Laleston, the scheme will fund the purchase of capital items and help with the running costs of the group, the Suncredit’ Community Benefit’ fund was set up with the help of BAVO some years ago to support communitie­s immediatel­y affected by the Solar Farm on fields next to Llangewydd Court Farm, Court Colman.

The deadline for applicatio­ns for funding is 1pm on Monday,

March 2.

Community EventsPort­hcawl: Every year there are a number of events which take place in the town organised by community and voluntary groups.

Porthcawl Town Council are keen to see more such events organised and are therefore inviting applicatio­ns from local charity or voluntary groups needing some financial support to make the event a success.

The Council is targeting support for events small or large that reflect our aims: a) benefit residents, business and visitors to Porthcawl b) showcase Porthcawl c) open to public.

This particular fund is not eligible for events which are fund raisers or collect money for onward distributi­on.

On the other hand

PTC are particular­ly interested in receiving early proposals, plans and costings for a summer and/or a Christmas event.

Young Welsh Poets At Sustainabl­e Wales’ Green Room: This event presents the work of two rising talents, Zoe Brigley and Laura Wainwright and is being held in The Green Room 5 James Street, Porthcawl, CF36 3BG on Friday, February 14 at 8pm.

Both have Welsh connection­s Zoe Brigley is Assistant Professor in Ohio State University in the USA but her family hail from Maesteg.

This year she has published poetry from Bloodaxe, and essays from Parthian.

Both books will be on sale on the night.

Her fellow poet Laura Wainwright lives in Newport and has this year been awarded a new writer’s bursary by Literature Wales.

She has written ‘New Territorie­s in Modernism’ published by the University of Wales Press.

Col Canto: Col Canto held a Fund Raising Concert last Friday to raise money for the Porthcawl Flower and Music Festival which this year is being held on Saturday, June 6 in All Saint’s Church in Victoria Avenue.

The Concert was held in the hall of the Albert Edward Prince of Wales Masonic Home in Pen y Lan Avenue Porthcawl and feature the combined talents of Col Canto the popular local group under their musical director Erica Beynon, and Maesteg and District Male Voice Choir under their conductor and Musical Director D Wyn Morgan.

The Maesteg Male Voice Choir at their concert best with classic eisteddfod­au and Elvis!

Wyn Morgan gave a master class in keeping the audience on your side.

Col Canto provided the perfect balance to the choir and every one there enjoyed the evening with lots of them asking as to when they would be back in this lovely venue.

They will all be back on June 6 in All Saints’ Tickets are £10 and will be available at the door and the concert starts at 6.30pm.

First Portcawl Cub And Beaver Scout Group: The group are looking for new members and I would remind you that they are a Fun organisati­on that in Baden Powell’s own words “Promotes Honour, Loyalty, Duty and of course Adventure“

Youngsters will learn about the outdoors, go camping, learn skills you and I could but dream about.

They will learn how to be prepared for life and how to be a responsibl­e person; but most of all they will have Fun and make friends not only here in Britain but all over the world.

The group meet on Monday evenings at the Mission Hall in Woodland Avenue Porthcawl. Sessions start at 5pm prompt and finish at 6.30pm.

Get your children or grandchild­ren to go along and have a ‘taster’, I’m sure that they would enjoy the experience.

Porthcawl Weekly Table Top Sale: Griffin Park,

New Road, Porthcawl, CF36 5DF - This is a weekly event held every Friday at Griffin Park Hall in New Road with doors open between 8am and 12noon.

There are always stalls with Books, Games,

CDs, DVDs and much more. Re- freshments are available on the day and if you want a table to sell things yourself, then tables are available at £5 for the morning.

Porthcawl Farmers Market: The next Farmers Market will be held in Griffin Park Hall, New Road, CF36 5DF on Saturday, February 22 between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

Porthcawl Veterans

Hub: The Veteran’s

Hub offers a NAAFI

Break on Saturday mornings between 9am and 12noon to all exservicem­en and women.

It is held in the Porthcawl Wellbeing Centre adjacent to the tennis courts and bowling club at Griffin Park.

The hub is a place where regular and reserve military veterans and their families can meet with other veterans, raise their problems and get advice.

The Hub is also open to members of the emergency services including Coastguard­s, RNLI and NCI, and ex Service men and women of all ages.

Museum And Historial Society: The next lecture in the PM&HS series of Lectures will be held on Tuesday, February 18 when Professor Mahmoud Ezzamel,will give a talk entitled ‘Pharaoh’s Workmen’.

Prof. Mahmoud Ezzamel, who was educated at Southampto­n and Alexandria is a

Professor at Cardiff Business College and a professori­al fellow at Cardiff University.

Following this on Tuesday, March 17 there will be a talk on ‘Shipwrecks Off Our Coast’ given by Mr Ross Martin from Porthcawl RNLI.

Finally, on Tuesday, April 21 Mrs Ceri Joseph will be giving a talk on ‘ The Civil War in Wales’.

I can’t wait for her talk on the Civil War in Wales.

Porthcawl Stroke Club: The Porthcawl Stroke Club meets every Wednesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm

Porthcawl Town Mayor’s Community Awards: On Friday, March 27 will see the first Mayor’s Community Awards evening.

This event will be instead of the Annual Mayor’s Ball and is aiming to recognise the unseen heroes who quietly and surely help make our town a better place or those who help others and make life better for everyone around them.

A nomination process has already started and worth winners will be announced on the evening and receive their due recognitio­n.

The evening will feature a meal with coffee, good company, the band ‘The Vallí Boys’, widely acknowledg­ed as the ultimate tribute act to ‘Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’. DJ Robbie Owen will be supporting the event with dancing till midnight.

Maesteg Harlequins: Next season we are looking to restart our youth team! If your currently in year 11, 12 or 12 in school and are looking to get into rugby or would like a fresh challenge then Maesteg Harlequins RFC is the place for you.
