Eco Echoes: The latest Green Room event will be Eco Echoes on Friday, March 20 at 8pm, in which we show Margaret Minhinnick’s eight minute film about plastic packaging.

This was originally part of Margaret’s Grassroots series of 18 films on green and social issues, first shown on HTV in 1995.

Margaret said: “The film is 25 years old. Yet not much has changed. But at last we are now aware of the dangers of plastic pollution.

“The truth is today, everywhere is polluted by plastic.”

Accompanyi­ng Margaret will be local writers and filmmakers who will screen or perform their new or environmen­tal-themed work. £4.

Porthcawl Community Singers: Samantha B are holding a fashion show organised by Porthcawl Community singers on Friday, March 27 at 7pm in Porthcawl YMCA John Street.

Tickets cost £5 from choir members or at the door and include a glass of wine.

Also on Monday, April 6 in All Saints Church Porthcawl, the Porthcawl Community Singers will present an evening of Reflective Music for Holy Week.

Entrance free but there will be a retiring collection for flood relief.

Porthcawk Farmers Market: The next Farmers Market will be held in Griffin Park Hall New Road CF36 5DF on Saturday, March 29 between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

All the usual stalls will be there and refreshmen­ts will be available.

Come along and buy your local vegetables etc without the plastic wrapping and in so doing do your bit to help save the planet.

Seinwedd-Soundscape: For one unmissable evening come along to the The Grand Pavilion on Saturday, March 27 at 7pm and be prepared to be inspired by nature as orchestral music, choral song photograph­y and the spoken word blend together to create one awe inspiring Soundscape of Wales.

The ‘sound’ for the evening will be provided by four choirs including Cantorion Coety Choir, Sounds Familiar, Côr Meibion Porthcawl, and Côr Dys-gwyr Porthcawl all collaborat­ing with Porthcawl Community Orchestra to perform a brand new commission­ed piece written and composed by the musical director for this project Isabel Thomas.

In addition to this, all of the musical acts will be performing their own individual pieces highlighti­ng the wealth of talent and variety of opportunit­ies open to members of the community to join in.

As part of the mix there will be will be spoken word from writer Mike Church and creative writing contribute­d by various members of Porthcawl U3A.

The ‘scape’ part of our Soundscape event will feature the unique work of lead photograph­er David Pearce, together with a variety of work from other photograph­ers from the area.

Cancer Research - Porthcawl Branch: One for your Diary!

The Porthcawl Branch of Cancer Research UK has now released the date for their Spring Lunch in the Hi-Tide in Mackworth Road. It is to be held on Saturday, April 18 at 12.30pm for 1pm.

Tickets have been held at £12 per person and can be obtained from Diane by phoning 01656 784762.

Choice of Menu can be given when ordering the tickets.

This is always a most enjoyable function and which always raises a healthy sum for Cancer Research.

There will be stalls and a raffle as well as lots of friends and friends you havn’t met yet!

Sandville Self Help:

There is always a First Class Table Top Sale at Sandville Court (CF33 4PU) on the first Saturday of the month and this month was no exception and so the next Table

Top Sale at Sandville Court will be held from 2.30-4.00pm on Saturday, April 4.

There are always lots of bargains from £1 up and there will be numerous stalls, a Class Raffle and Refreshmen­ts will be available on the day.

Flowers and Music: Col Canto are organising a Flower and Music Festival on Saturday, June 6 in All Saint’s Church in Victoria Avenue.

The concert the Flower and Music Festival is free to enter and the Maesteg Male Voice Choir and Col Canto will be there during the day along with other Porthcawl Choirs and Groups.

Look out for posters and programmes nearer the time.

Porthcawl Weekly TablerTop Sale: Griffin Park, New Road, Porthcawl, CF36 5DF .

This is a weekly event held every Friday at Griffin Park Hall in New Road with doors open from 8am-12noon.

There are always stalls with Books, Games, CDs, DVDs and much more.

Refreshmen­ts are available on the day and if you want a table to sell things yourself, then tables are available at £5 for the morning.

Porthcawl Veterans

Hub: The Veteran’s Hub offers a NAAFI Break on Saturday mornings from 9am-12noon to all exservicem­en and women.

It is held in the Porthcawl Wellbeing Centre adjacent to the tennis courts and bowling club at Griffin Park.

Museum And Historical Society: The next lecture in the PM&HS series of Lectures will be held on Tuesday, March 17 when there will be a talk on Shipwrecks Off Our Coast given by Mr Ross Martin from Porthcawl RNLI.

Then for the last lecture of the series on Tuesday, April 21 Mrs Ceri Joseph will be giving a talk on

The Civil War in Wales.

Porthcawl Stroke Club: The Porthcawl Stroke

Club meets every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm-4pm Albert Edward Prince of Wales residentia­l Home in Pen y Lan Avenue Porthcawl CF36 3LY and their mantra is ‘All Friends Together.’

Porthcawl Town Mayor’s Community Awards: Friday, March 27 will see the first Mayor’s Community Awards evening: this event will be instead of the Annual Mayor’s Ball and is aiming to recognise the unseen heroes who quietly and surely help make our town a better place or those who help others and make life better for everyone around them.

A nomination process has already started and worth winners will be announced on the evening and receive their due recognitio­n.

The evening will feature a meal with coffee, good company, the band

The Valli Boys – widely acknowledg­ed as the ultimate tribute act to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

DJ Robbie Owen will be supporting the event with dancing till midnight.

Porthcawl Townswomen­s Guild News: The next meeting of the PTG will be today Wednesday, March 11 from 2pm at All Saints’ Church Hall.

This will be the Branch AGMand there will be someone from Porthcawl National Coastguard Institutio­n showing a video of the work that they carry out in Porthcawl to make the Bristol Channel a safer place to be.

Porthcawl Townswomen’s guild raised £500 for the NCI recently so it will be interestin­g to see how the money is being used.

Benefit Concert for Storm Dennis Flood Victims: A Benefit Concert will be at the Hi-Tide Inn, Porthcawl on Sunday, March 15, from 1pm- 8pm with all proceeds going to Storm Dennis Flood Victims Support.

The headline act is

Peter Karrie the finest Phantom ever and the Hi-Tiders Band will be accompanyi­ng Juan Lozano, Darren Graceland Jones and Rocking Dave Riley, (all Elvis Tribute Artists) and also Dean Jones as Tom Jones.

Completing the exciting line-up are the Porthcawl Bandits, Lenny Dee,

Bruce Anderson, Beth Jones and Glen Scott.

All artists are giving their time for free.

Annual Concert: On February 29 I had the pleasure of attending the annual concert of cor Meibion with guest artiste Rhys Meirion.

We were entertaine­d by the choir with wonderful renditions of both traditiona­l and modern songs, the first half being more traditiona­l with the likes of morte criste and the always crowd pleasing calon lan with Rhys Meirion singing the most beautiful rendition of anofanaf angel.

During the second half we were enthralled us with Hello Dolly and You make me feel so young, both of these are new to their extensive repertoire.

Unit 48 were also in attendance – this group of six talented young people who are studying HND Music could play multiple instrument­s and sing they were fantastic.

Congratula­tions to all involved.

Cor Meibion Maesteg a’r Cylch: “Bring more chairs” was the cry at the start of their 45th annual concert. Such was the number of people coming to hear the choir and their guest artist the wonderful tenor Rhys Meirion from North Wales.

This year due to the Townhall being closed for refurbishm­ent the concert was moved to the local comprehens­ive school and our thanks go to them for allowing us to use their facilities which,looking to the turnout was very successful.

The choir would like to thank the audience who turned out in great numbers and made the whole night worthwhile.

Rotary Maesteg: Maesteg Rotary President Gwynfor Phillips handed over a cheque for £1,500 for the purchase and installati­on of an (AED) defibrilla­tor in Maesteg town centre to Nikki Dart of Maesteg Community First Responders.

The new AED will be installed in the old New Theatre doorway of the Sawyers Arms in Commercial Street, and electricit­y will be supplied by J D Wetherspoo­n.

Cake and coffee for Carers: At Maesteg Sports Centre on Monday, March 23 from 2.30pm-4.30pm.

Garth WI: Cup Cake Bouquets by Audrey enthralled with a demonstrat­ion at our February meeting.

At our March meeting we will be celebratin­g Dydd Gwyl Dewi.

It will be a little late on March 11 at Garth Celtic Club starting at 7pm.

We will be having a Welsh food tasting evening and quiz.

New members are welcome to come along and join us we meet on the second Wednesday of the month at Celtic Sports & Social Club Garth.

Theatre: We are delighted to announce that we have received four nomination­s for NODA awards!

The winners will be announced in Hereford at the end of June.

Best Youth Performanc­e – Charlotte Lenehan ( Julia), Best Supporting Youth Performanc­e – Harly Videan (Glen Guglia), Sophie Thomas (Holly), Best Youth Production – The Wedding Singer.

Nomination­s: It has also been finally announced that Maesteg Musical Theatre Society are yet again nominated by NODA for Best Pantomime for Aladdin.
