Crucial win for Bont

They finally teach the students a lesson at the fourth time of asking

-

PENYBONT last Friday night pulled off their best victory of the season in the J D Cymru Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff Metropolitan University at the SDM Glass Stadium, writes Tony Poole.

It was a first victory of the season over the Students – coming at the fourth time of asking - and it’s improved the chances of Bont gaining a second term in the top flight.

However, any fans who left it late in departing the warmth of the clubhouse missed out on witnessing either of the goals.

They came from Daniel Jefferies and Lewis Harling, and were registered around a minute in to both halves.

Having lost two previous home games to Cardiff Met in league and Welsh Cup and picked up a point away, Bont got off to another dream start.

With a little over 60 seconds on the clock, the Students obviously hadn’t done their set-piece homework – and paid the price.

The ball pinged around the box from a Kane Owen corner before Jefferies got the final touch, and the ball drifted past goalkeeper William Fuller.

But considering Bont had a poor record defending leads and had kept just one previous clean sheet in the league (a 0-0 draw at home to Caernarfon Town back in January), no-one was getting carried away with the strike.

However, the response from the Students was limited and as the half drew to an end, bustling Billy Borge, Kane Owen and Mikey George were all prominent for a determined home side.

The same scenario then unfolded on the restart and with the half just a minute old, Daniel Griffiths pumped the ball into the penalty area.

Harling latched on to it before turning on a sixpence to drive the ball past goalkeeper Fuller, and give buoyant Bont a two-goal cushion.

It nearly became 3-0 soon after when an Emlyn Lewis back pass almost backfired, and goalkeeper Fuller was forced to rescue the situation.

But as time dragged on the Students continued to fail an examination, and Ashley Morris in the home goal received an armchair ride.

Afterwards Cardiff Met boss Christian Edwards admitted the Students were lacklustre, and Bont were worthy recipients of all three points.

“Credit to Penybont, as they typified a club towards the bottom of any table that’s looking to dodge relegation,” he said.

Meanwhile, high-flying Airbus UK gained a surprise 3-1 win at Carmarthen Town last Saturday, but still remain bottom on 17 points from Carmarthen Town 18 and Penybont 21.

Bont now have a run of key away matches, commencing with Airbus UK on Saturday while a week later they head to Carmarthen Town.
