Ogmore Valley Bucket Collection: On Saturday, March 7, the women and girls from the Valley Ravens mini/junior section went on a bucket collection to raise money for club funds. The day started in Blackmill at 3pm, finishing further up the Ogmore Valley a few hours later, during which time they collected a staggering £577.60. A massive thank you to everybody who helped out on the day, and also to those who gave to such a worthy cause, keeping grassroots children’s rugby alive. A special thanks goes to the Blaengarw Hotel for their incredibly generous £200 donation.
Garw Valley Heritage Society: The Garw Valley Heritage Society is pleased to announce that it has been given charitable status as a Charity Incorporated Organisation by the Charities Commission. Grateful thanks are due to BAVO, the Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations, for its unstinting help and support in achieving this goal. BAVO’s Deb Evans was a constant source of advice and aid with the large amount of paperwork involved.
On February 6, the old society was dissolved and the new one came into being under its number 1187117. The officers had to resign and be re-elected, and a board of trustees appointed- see below. The Society’s name remains the same, as do all bank and contact details, but its new status means that in matters of donations and grant applications there are tax advantages such as Gift Aid, and in matters of recognition and involvement with external bodies such as other Heritage and Historical societies the GVHS becomes a more important asset to the Garw Valley.
Trustees of the
Garw Valley Heritage Society: Roger Stokes - Chairman, Jean Fowlds - Secretary, Ian BlackTreasurer, Colin Simper - Deputy Chairman and Photographer, Gerald Jarvis - Research and reporting, Linda Webb - Archivist and Katie Humphrey—Social Media contact.
It is planned that an Open Day, to mark the new status, will be held in the summer this year, a year which also marks the centenary of the death of Daniel James of Calon Lan fame.
Full details of those events will be given nearer the time, but in the meantime do not forget to pay us a visit on the weekend of May
8 - 10th at Bryngarw Park, where there will be an exhibition of the Society’s photographs and artefacts, some relating to WW2, as the weekend will also be marking the centenary of VE Day.

Valley Ravens: The Valley Ravens will be holding their first ever rugby festival on Sunday, May 3, with over 50 mini/ junior rugby sides already entered throughout the various age groups. It’s going to be a jam packed day full of family fun and there will be more information to follow in the coming weeks.
The Valley Ravens are seeking sponsorship for the day (pitch sponsor £35 and match day programme £10) so if anyone is interested pleas drop a line to valleyravens@gmail.com and our web site.
The committee then turned its attention to the club’s 8th Annual Plant Sale which is scheduled for Saturday, May 2. The normal practice is for us to erect a marquee outside Cliff Cottage on the lawn. The sale has become very popular and the marquee is soon very busy with customers eagerly seeking out their favoured plants. Given the fact that the coronavirus is expected to peak in the next few months the committee decided that the event will not take place this year in the usual format, as social distancing would be impossible.
The committee through its plant sale team is developing an ordering system that will allow customers to complete an order form online or by hand. A team will then make up the orders for collection at a mutually agreed time over the long weekend that includes Saturday, May 2.
This is a huge leap of faith by the club and it is hoped the vast majority of the quality plants, presently being grown, will be eagerly purchased in advance by customers old and new. Please look out for further information in due course.
On Monday, March 9, Kevin Thomas was sadly unable to deliver his lecture “Raising Bedding Plants” owing to a family illness. Kevin who is a true friend of the club arranged for Rob Evans to give a talk in his place. Rob proved to be a very popular speaker, giving a talk on Gladioli, and is sure to be invited back again.
The club wishes its members and friends well during this difficult time.
