Plan to build apartments on hotel site
A FORMER seafront hotel in Porthcawl could be demolished to make way for more than 50 apartments.
Plans to redevelop the site of the former Glamorgan Holiday Hotel on The Square off the Esplanade into a five-storey apartment block have been unveiled.
Developer Xcape proposes to transform the site to include a mix of 54 one, two and three-bedroom apartments, 64 car parking spaces, new landscaping features and a communal garden.
According to the draft planning documents, 16 one and two-bed properties (30%) would be affordable while the threebed flats would include en-suite bathrooms. Some apartments would also “embrace distant views across Sandy Bay and the Bristol Channel”.
Residents would have access to dedicated bicycle storage to “encourage sustainable travel”.
The hotel provided holidays for older and disabled people for 42 years but was forced to closed in 2016 due to a “lack of custom”.
The building, which overlooks the harbour, has since remained empty.
A spokesman for Xcape said: “Xcape believes that its plans represent a significant opportunity to improve the appearance of this site, contributing to the wider regeneration of Porthcawl Waterfront, and providing muchneeded homes for local people.”
The company has launched a consultation and is asking for members of the public to submit their views before it lodges formal plans with Bridgend County Borough Council. The deadline for submitting feedback is midnight on Sunday, April 12.
