Police chiefs concerned over differences in lockdown conditions for England and Wales

-

POLICE chiefs have voiced concern at the “total shambles” and “utter confusion” over how easing lockdown restrictions in England could lead to a new influx of visitors to Wales.

Boris Johnson announced an easing of the coronavirus lockdown on Sunday, but the rules only affects England.

The Prime

Minister revealed new advice on Sunday to encourage a way out of lockdown, including saying people could travel to take their exercise.

But that policy is at odds with the situation here in Wales.

First Minister Mark Drakeford has again reiterated the “stay home” message has not changed in the fight to tackle the

Covid-19 pandemic, despite the UK Government issuing a new slogan – “Stay alert, control the virus, save lives”.

Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner, Jeff Cuthbert, said: “I heard what Boris Johnson said... while we are clear what the rules in Wales are, certainly in the eyes of the public I’m sure what he has said has muddied the water.”

He added: “The danger now is that people from parts of England, and particularly the border counties, will be under the impression from the Prime Minister’s statement that it is okay to drive to Wales for exercise and activities. It must be made clear that it is not.

“Doing so risks putting a greater strain on our public services, including policing in Gwent.”

Mr Cuthbert said he will be speaking to the four Welsh police and crime commissioners and chief constables to discuss “a joined up approach to dealing with the issues this is likely to cause.”

In Wales, people should not drive to a location to exercise unless they have “health or mobility issues.”

Exercise should be carried out locally and “should start and end at home”, the Welsh Government says.

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones echoed the concerns about daytrippers from England crossing the border to Wales, sparking fears of repeat of scenes in March when hundreds of cars were parked at beauty
