Talented young player has a bright future

-

CONTINUING with the idea of giving our communities some information about some of our players in our brass bands, Elisabeth Rogers, of Llwydcoed Band, has sent in details about young Iwan Hill, who joined Llwydcoed Band in January of this year.

Iwan plays 2nd cornet with Llwydcoed Band and started playing at the age of eight on flugel horn, playing with Tylorstown Junior Band, as his father Terry played in the Senior Band.

Iwan’s dad was his main influence and he would always help him in any aspect of his playing.

He then joined Ynyshir Senior Band in 2016 and while playing for them he had the opportunity to play many solos in concerts and contests. He met many lifetime friends in the band.

In March 2019, Iwan joind the Pontardulais Band on front row. He enjoyed his time with the Bont and was given fantastic opportunities while playing with the band.

Iwan is taught by Cory

Band’s Helen Williams and Tom Hutchinson and is currently studying music at Coleg Y Cymoedd in Nantgarw.

In September he will be studying cornet at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where he’ll be taught by Richard Marshall and Ian Porthouse.

Iwan is a member of the NYBBW and has enjoyed every minute playing in the band and playing under great conductors and accompanying some of the finest players around.

He joined Llwydcoed in January this year and played his first contest with the band in March at the Welsh Regionals Championships, where the band qualified for the National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall.

Iwan has always dreamed of playing at the RAH and is so excited to get there. He said: “Since joining the band I have been inspired by the attitude both in and out of the bandroom and impressed with the standard of playing. I have really enjoyed playing under the direction of Chris Turner and have been inspired by his knowledge and enthusiasm.”

Iwan is a total bander and can be seen at any brass band contest going, including the European Brass Band Championships in Montreux, Switzerland.

In the future he hopes to become a brass teacher and become the best player he can be.
