A CYCLIST who was hit by a Jeep in Bridgend died as a result of a blunt head injury, an inquest has heard.

David “Davey” Jones, 41, from Pencoed, died in the crash at around 5.50am on May 27 on the A48 Crack Hill.

An inquest hearing at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court last Thursday heard that Mr Jones was given a provisional cause of death as 1a) blunt head injury and 1b) distraction injury to neck.

Coroner Rachel Knight adjourned Mr Jones’ inquest to November 20.

Following his death Mr Jones’ family released a statement paying tribute to him. It said: “We are in profound shock in the sudden death of Davey. To us he was just one of those people who was so down to earth and always first to offer help to anyone.

“Everybody who knew [him] just got on with him as he always had a smile on his face. He was such a hard worker and never let anything get him down.

“He was a keen cyclist and was out that day keeping to his fitness regime before he started another hard day’s work. He has died doing something that he loved and we as a family take some comfort in that.

“He was a father of two beautiful young children who are both now heartbroken with the loss of their Dad. He worshipped both his parents and was adored by all of his family.

“He is going to be missed by all his family and friends and looking at the Facebook comments we didn’t realise how much of our community he had touched.

“As a family we would like to thank everybody for all their kind words and support and would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the emergency services who attended the scene and tried their best to help Davey.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident or to the manner in which the Jeep was being driven prior to the collision to contact them or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
