WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

FFION Tynan (Pyle & Kenfig) enjoyed a fine run last week in the 125th Women’s Amateur Championship that was staged at the West Lancashire club in Blundellsands, Southport.

She reached the last-16 stage of the competition before bowing out, 2 & 1, to Annabell Fuller (Roehampton), who the previous week won the English Women’s Open Amateur Championship at Burnham & Berrow.

Earlier in the week, the tournament was battered by Storm Francis, resulting in the qualifying stroke-play stage of 36 holes being halved.

Ffion and Darcey Harry (Vale Resort) both signed for six-over par 78, and then both girls survived countback to reach the matchplay section.

In the last-64 stage, Ffion beat Carolina Melgratie (Italy) on the 19th hole while Darcey swept to 5 & 4 success over Victoria Levy (Switzerland).

Ffion, who is just 17, was then involved in a showdown with 57-yearold Laura Webb (East Berkshire), and the talented teenager, who also plays out of Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire, pulled off a 2 & 1 win.

But Darcey lost 3 & 2 to Alessia Nobilio (Italy), leaving Ffion to fly the Welsh flag in the third round of 16 players.

But it wasn’t to be for Ffion – who twice led by a hole - during a tight battle with the English girl that was all square exiting the 13th green.

However, Ffion lost holes 14 and 16, and this swayed the issue in the 2 & 1 defeat.

Fuller went on to reach the 36-hole final only to lose by one hole against Aline Krauter (Germany).

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

BRIDGEND County interest in the 125th staging of The Amateur Championship through Jake Hapgood (Southerndown) and Matt Roberts (Royal Porthcawl) ended at the stroke-play stage.

With play ruled out on day one at Royal Birkdale in Southport – owing to Storm Francis – a decision was made to play just one round of strokeplay in order to qualify for the last-64 matchplay stage.

Two rounds of qualifying strokeplay was introduced back in 1983, and this was the first occasion for the 36 holes to be cut to just 18.

Roberts shot six-over par 77 to end up in a tie for 69th place while Hapgood was a further shot back and tied for 83rd position.

PYLE & KENFIG

A BIRDIE on the third hole cemented victory for local builder James Lott in the Eynon Cups competition at Pyle & Kenfig.

Despite failing to score on hole 10, eight pars and a similar amount of bogeys produced a winning card of 35 Stableford points.

Runner-up Rhodri Booth rued two blobs during a decent round that amounted to 34 points while on the same mark were Paul Gunn, Simon Comley and Gareth Dawkins.

Three players then shot 33 points – Michael Wilson, Craig Jones and G G Williams (two birdies, 12 pars, four bogeys) – and they finished a point to the good over James Williams, Gareth Jenkins, Lee Thompson, Luc Davies and Matthew Davies.

In Division Two, victory went to Joseph Muir on 37 points from James Woods 36, Gareth Carter-Clare (34), Gareth R Thomas and Dave Rhys (both 33 points).

Meanwhile, young Elin Tynan finished runner-up in the Gloucestershire Ladies Junior County Championship that was staged at the Gloucester club at Robinswood Hill.

She shot a three-over par score of 75 that led to her handicap being reduced to just six.

SOUTHERNDOWN

WENVOE Castle champion golfer Matt Mullooly pulled off another victory at Southerdown, triumphing on 34 points in a White Box Stableford tournament.

Playing off an away handicap, his winning card contained birdies on holes three and 13 along with 12 pars and four bogeys.

He finished four points clear of Jonathan Davies; Thomas Savill scored 29 points to finish a point in front of Jonathan Vernon, Gavin Embling and Graham McMonagle.

Another visiting player swept to victory in the Men’s Open, and this time it was Elliott Camfield (Celtic Manor), who won the day on 39 points.

Despite failing to score on holes 12 and 14, it was a case of four pars and 12 bogeys doing the trick.

Neil Channell was easily the most successful of the home players – he shot 37 points for runner-up honours – while par rounds of 36 points came from Richard Monnickendham (Cardiff), Lee Ryder and Brian Waters (both Celtic Manor).

Southerndown star Andy Pentith took sixth place on 35 points while on the same level came Sam Taylor (Henbury), ex-Aberavon scrum-half Andrew Jacobs (Neath) and Darren Parry (Greenmeadow).

And nearest the pin prizes were snapped up by Thomas Jones (Greenmeadow) and Jonny Rivers (St Mellons).

Turning to a Midweek Stableford, victory went to Chris Matthews with a winning card of 39 points containing an eagle on 13, birdie, nine pars and seven bogeys.

Tom Goldsworthy was runner-up on countback 36 points from Mark Beattie (two on hole five) while Sam Forman shot five birdies on a 35-point card to finish a point in front of Ian Park.

On the Ladies scene, Pat Evans carded a par on the home green to seal victory on 38 points in a Stableford competition.

That enabled her to finish five points clear of Janet Booth while Shani Fancett sunk a putt for two on the seventh in her 33-pointer.

COED-Y-MWSTWR

RAYMOND Hapgood has hit a rich vein of form, and proved the point last week in lifting the Captain’s Trophy at Coed-y-Mwstwr.

Normally, it’s son Jake that rules the roost in the Hapgood household, but that wasn’t the case last week following a sizzling round of 35 points that saw him finish three points clear of captain Simon Lake.

The competition dovetailed with an August Stableford event that Peter Fraser won the day on 38 points ahead of Karl Sheppard 37 and John Rosser 36.

Six players carded twos – Stephen Stock, Rob Wallace (both hole four), Karl Sheppard (eighth), Morgan Luke (11th), Alan Cooper, Geoffrey Jones (both penultimate hole).

Turning to an All Day Stableford contest, Alan Cooper hit the heights in scoring 41 points to finish a point in front of Wayne Hopkins.

Next on the scoreboard came three 38-point men – Dave Archibald, Keith Brown and Glyn Jackman – while also under the card were 37-point finishers Morgan Luke, Rhodri Owen and Malcolm Burn.

The Ladies Section held their Away Day event at Bryn Road, and Ruth Lane emerged with a countback 34-point success over Olwen Maund.

Kim Burn was third on 33 points with Tracey Tyre a further point back.

GROVE

NEIL Butcher was a cut above the rest and duly lifted the BALSA Trophy last week at the Grove with a beefy 37 Stableford points.

He put meat on the bone courtesy of eight pars and nine bogeys, but he did endure a choppy experience on the par-three fourth and failed to score.

The victory was by a single point over Ian D Thomas (seven pars, 11 bogeys) with Martin Hodgson signing for 35 points.

Low-handicapper Jason Thomas took fourth place on 34 points (birdie on 15th hole, 11 pars, six bogeys) with Martin Evans the pick of the 32-point finishers (nine pars, seven bogeys, two blobs).

Also on 32 points were Robin Griffiths and ex-Neath lock Stuart Hodgson, and they finished a point in front of five players – Stephen Channell, Thomas Murray, Philip Evans, Keith Davies and Geraint J Thomas.

Just three putts for two were sunk on the day, and they came from John Green, Julian Lewis and powerful exMaudlam cricketer Byron Power.

The Senior Section last week staged the Pairs Cup at the height of Storm Francis with Derek Bines and Bob Leslie blown to victory on countback 32 points over ex-Coed-yMwstwr star Paul Hyder and Joe Ronan.

Meanwhile, Steve Booth shot a fine 36 points to win a Thursday Morning Club event from John Green with 35, Philip Thomas 33 and Wayne James 32.

And last week it was the turn of Gwyn Parkhouse to take the plaudits on a better-back nine score of 32 Stableford points over John Green while Philip Thomas took third spot on 30 points.
