A TEENAGER suffered “serious injuries” after managing to leave a mental health unit where she was a patient.

Alisha Stott was admitted to the Ty Liddiard unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital, in Bridgend, last month after struggling with mental health issues.

The 17-year-old had been a patient at the unit for around a month before her mum says an “altercation” led to her becoming “distressed” and wanting to leave.

Her mother Zoe Davies, from Brackla, said: “She had an altercation and was moved to the Seren ward.

“Staff told her she had to return to the main section of the ward, the Enfys ward, and she was distressed because she didn’t want to return there.

“On September 11 she was able to open the door and leave.

“She was distressed in the lead-up to leaving and she just walked out and it wasn’t secure.”

After managing to leave the unit, Alisha made her way to a multi-storey car park, which she then fell from.

Ms Davies said: “I was informed she had left and

I was on my way to go and find her and then I saw all the police and that the road was blocked. It was horrific.”

The following day Alisha was transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where she underwent spinal surgery after breaking two vertebrae in the lower part of her spine.

Her mum said she will have to undergo rehabilitation after seriously injuring her back.

Ms Davies, 34, said: “She’s got serious injuries to her back and underwent spinal surgery on September 13.

“She’s got to stay on bed rest for six weeks and then she is going to have rehabilitation for her back and walking.

“None of this would have happened if they had kept her secure and safe like they were meant to.

“I’m just really angry that she was able to leave.

“She left a secure unit, which is my concern.”

Ms Davies said she has been told that an investigation is being carried out into what happened.

“For confidentiality reasons, no further details will be provided, as we do not comment on individual cases.”

South Wales Police said that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said: “At 8.35pm on Friday, September 11, police and paramedics were called to the Princess of Wales Hospital after a 17-year-old girl fell from a multi-storey car park. She remains in hospital with what are serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We were called on Friday, September 11, at approximately 9.07pm to reports of someone needing urgent medical attention near Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. We responded with two rapid response vehicles and one emergency ambulance.

“One patient was takenthe to Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.”
