A POPULAR grandmother who had moved to Porthcawl to be closer to family died after being found unresponsive in her garden hot tub, an inquest has heard.

Mandy Pugh, 57, was discovered in the water by her husband on September 11.

An inquest opening held yesterday heard Mrs Pugh and her husband Lee Pugh had a hot tub at their home in Moor Lane, Nottage, which they would regularly use.

At around 10pm the couple had been using the hot tub when Mr Pugh went into the house to watch TV.

When he returned a short time later Mrs Pugh was found face down and unresponsive in the water.

She was declared dead at the scene.

Speaking after the brief hearing Mr Pugh described his wife of 20 years as a “bubbly” mother and grandmother who was loved by everyone.

In December last year the pair had left their shop at Penmaenmawr in Conwy to be nearer their families in Porthcawl and Ammanford.

Known as someone who “never missed a day of work”, Mrs Pugh had previously run her own hairdresser’s in Llandybie and spent a number of years at CK Supermarkets.

Mr Pugh said: “At the start of the year we moved. We closed our shop we had kept as we wanted to be close to family.

“She was the life and soul of the party. She knew loads of people and everyone that knew her loved her. She was always happy. Her granddaughter was the apple of her eye.”

The short hearing was told a postmortem examination was carried out by consultant pathologist Jason Shannon at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. No provisional cause of death was given due to pending investigations.

Assistant coroner David Regan opened and adjourned the inquest, setting a provisional date for a conclusion to be held on October 14, 2021.
