‘Dad died on ride home from pub’
A DAD-OF-TWO who died after being found in the road had been cycling home from the pub, an inquest opening heard.
Huw Wright, 43, was declared dead at the scene after being found by a member of the public in Thornhill, Cardiff.
The family of Mr Wright, a teacher in Bridgend, said he was a “passionate and adventurous man” with an “amazing sense of humour”.
An inquest was opened into his death at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court yesterday.
It heard that Mr Wright was last seen cycling home from a pub on the evening of September 15 after meeting a friend for a “catch-up”.
He was later found by a member of the public at the side of the carriageway of Thornhill Road at around 11pm.
The inquest heard he was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity was confirmed by his widow.
A post-mortem examination was carried out at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, and the inquest was adjourned pending further investigation including toxicology and histology results.
Coroner Graeme Hughes added that the post-mortem examination found evidence of a “chest wall trauma”.
He said: “My officers and South Wales Police officers will continue to investigate the circumstances around Mr Wright’s death.
“I will adjourn this hearing while those continue.”
A provisional date for a full inquest was set for October 20, 2021.
Following the incident his family issued a statement which said: “Huw Wright, 43, a much-loved and devoted family man who lived life to the full, tragically lost his life on September 15, leaving a massive hole in the lives of his family and friends.
“Huw was a respected teacher who worked at Ysgol Bryn Castell, Bridgend.
“He had a long career in teaching and was highly regarded by pupils and colleagues alike.
“Huw was a passionate and adventurous man who had a vibrant character with an amazing sense of humour.
“Huw’s family were the centre of his world.”
Mr Wright was also described as a “devoted” husband to Claire and an “amazing” father to Gruff and Gwyneth.
