Christmas Day swim to go virtual for 2020
THE 56th annual Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim is going to be different this year.
Organisers of the 2020 event have had to rethink the format of the event, in line with coronavirus regulations.
A spokesman said: “We are disappointed to announce that this year’s Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim will not be taking place this Christmas Day at Sandy Bay.
“But, with everyone’s help we want to make this year’s swim unforgettable for all the right reasons. We’re asking people to think of exciting and imaginative ways to complete their own Virtual Christmas Swim at any time between now and December 25th to raise money for this year’s headline charity Wales Air Ambulance and make a ‘SplashForCash’.
“This year’s theme is ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and is in recognition of our key workers and looking forward to a brighter future.
“Why don’t you show us what this means to you?
“Do you have the Courage to make a ‘SplashForCash’ and take a dip this December?
“You could wear your Ruby Slippers whilst making a ‘splashforcash’ with super soakers or a garden hose.
“Could you dress in rainbow colours and ‘SplashForCash’ while dancing in a paddling pool in your garden?
“So, get creative, have fun and most importantly whatever your plans are for raising money please don’t be the scarecrow, use your Brain and Stay Sage!
“We must stress that whatever splashers do it must be safe, legal, in accordance with the relevant Government Covid guidelines - and decent!
“As you will all be in different places at different times we just cannot provide the usual safety cover and we are certainly not encouraging splashers to break the law. “Sadly, we can’t provide the usual tot of whisky either!
“One tradition that we’ve managed to keep the same for the 2020 event is the Porthcawl Christmas Swim mug!
“For a £5 minimum donation you can reserve yours using the link on our website.
“Details of the collection arrangements are there too.
“Thanks to Driven Taxis’ sponsorship of the mugs this year, ALL money donated will be distributed to local charities and organisations.
“Please visit our website www.christmasswim. org or our Facebook page Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim for details of how to share your photos and videos as well as how to set up your fundraising page.”
The Wales Air Ambulance have a Just Giving page for the event.
Splashers can enter their details and select “Porthcawl Christmas Swim 2020” from the list of fund raising events.
There is also a GoFundMe page that can be used to make one off donations.
These funds will be distributed by the Christmas Swim Committee to various local charities and organisations.
