Nathan reaches awards final

-

A WELSH Ambulance Service manager has made the finals of the Control Room Awards after being nominated by his own staff in the Leader of the Year category.

Nathan Hughes, from Bridgend, is the trust’s Medical Priority Despatch System manager based in Cwmbran, Torfaen.

The APD Control Room Awards will take place virtually on the evening of May 14 and stand to celebrate the outstanding commitment, achievement and bravery of the international control room community. Remarkably, the 32-year-old has only been in his management position for six months.

Having been at the Welsh Ambulance Service since 2013, starting as an emergency call taker and then in an auditor’s role, Nathan was left stunned when he opened the email informing him he had been selected as one of three finalists from more than 500 nominations.

“I couldn’t believe it when I read it,” he said “I was shocked, surprised, but most of all honoured that colleagues had that much faith in me that they went out of their way to nominate me for this award.

“Every service has faced enormous challenges this year, so to make the shortlist this year is really special.”

When questioned on how he has adapted to management and why he feels his colleagues put him forward, Nathan said: “First thing I did was to have oneto- ones with all my staff as I wanted to get to know them and find out what makes them tick.”

Nathan will be watching the ceremony at home with his wife Mel.
