Volunteer to put his best foot forward for first-aid charity
A VOLUNTEER from Bridgend will be putting his best foot forward, walking 100 kilometres to raise vital funds for Wales’ leading first-aid charity.
Mike Flanagan, 59, is hoping to raise £500 for St John Ambulance Cymru by embarking on a five-day trek across South Wales along the A48, from Swansea to
Newport via Cardiff.
The former firefighter was inspired by the Captain Tom 100 challenge and has tentatively renamed his efforts as the ‘3,2,1 challenge’ as he will be walking through three cities, on two feet and travelling 100km.
Mike said: “As a firstaid volunteer myself, I’ve seen first-hand the difference our volunteers can make in challenging situations and so I want to raise as much money as I can to help them continue their lifesaving work.”
Mike has done plenty to prepare for the event including building up his walking endurance and replenishing his first-aid kit, which he will have as part of his equipment to complete the challenge.
“I’ve got a weakness in my knees which I’m a little worried about so I’m going to take it slow, pace myself and do everything I can to make sure I can to get through the challenge without injury.
“It’s really important to be prepared for events like this. I don’t want to let anyone down,” said Mike.
St John Ambulance Cymru is Wales’ leading first-aid charity and has been supporting communities in Wales for over 100 years.
The charity has been proving vital support to the NHS in Wales during the coronavirus pandemic giving their expertise to Wales’ field hospitals, transporting patients and providing care at vaccination centres.
Mike’s 3,2,1 challenge started on Friday, May 14 and you can keep up with his progress or donate via Just Giving to help him to reach his fundraising goal. Visit https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/mikeflanagan2
