The temperatures were sizzling – but most were able to keep their cool and chill out over a glorious Bank Holiday weekend – with huge crowds flocking to the sands at popular Welsh holiday spots such as Porthcawl, bring a muchneeded boost for traders.

THE temperatures were sizzling - but most were able to keep their cool and chill out on Bank Holiday Monday – with huge crowds flocking to the sands at Porthcawl.

Apart from an early hiccup when a lorry broke down in the Brynglas tunnels on the main M4 gateway into Wales in Newport, there were few reported problems on the roads.

Traffic was heavy in places, but there were few major queues reported.

Temperatures of 22C appeared to be the norm in Wales.

The Met Office reported the highest temperatures in Kinlochewe in Scotland (25.1C) and Northholt, near London (24.8C).

It was officially the warmest day of the year so far, with the previous hottest day back on March 30, when we saw 24.5C at Kew Gardens, London.

Becky Mitchell, a meteorologist from the Met Office, warned there could be some thunderstorms on the way.

“There will potentially be some thunderstorms by midweek, the first bout of showers will come into parts of the South West and there will be a few thunderstorms in that,” she said.

The storms in the South West are expected to hit on Wednesday, with the South East due a bit of a soaking by Friday.

May has been the fourth wettest on record for the UK, and the wettest ever for Wales.
