Man left in serious condition after alleged altercatio­n in early hours

A MAN is in a serious condition after sustaining a head injury following an alleged assault in Porthcawl.

South Wales Police said officers were called at around 3.20am on Sunday morning to reports of a man suffering a head injury outside The Beachcombe­r in Porthcawl. Officers said the incident may have taken place earlier.

The man was taken to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where his condition was described as “serious”.

A 39-year-old man was arrested within around an hour of the incident being reported, and he remained in police custody on suspicion of affray. Officers say it appears to be an “isolated incident” involving men who are known to each other.

A cordon remained in place throughout Sunday morning, and forensic officers were spotted at the scene.

Detective Inspector Dan Michel said on Sunday: “Officers are currently carrying out inquiries, but we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed an altercatio­n on Eastern Promenade earlier this morning, around 1.30am.

“For anyone visiting Porthcawl who is not familiar with the area Eastern Promenade is the road by the edge of Coney Beach and the fair.”

Detective Inspector Jason McGill said: “This is a safe area and such violent behaviour will not be tolerated. Officers are continuing with extensive enquiries into the circumstan­ces of the incident and we are appealing for informatio­n.

“In particular, we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed a fight between two groups of men on Eastern Promenade between 2am and 3.30am.

“For anyone visiting Porthcawl, who is not familiar with the area, Eastern Promenade is the road by the edge of Coney Beach and the fair.”
