IT WAS rather heartwarming to see so many bands taking part in the National finals for the lower section bands after so long being isolated, with band members not even being able to get together in a bandroom let alone a concert or contest stage.
The results of the Lower Section Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain which took place at the Centaur Hall, Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday and Sunday are as follows:
Fourth Section: 14 bands. Test piece – “An Elgar Portrait” by Dan Price.
Adjudicators: Martin Heartfield, John Maines. Jonathan Pippen.
The bands taking part in this section in alphabetical order are: Amington; BMP Europe Ltd; City of Birmingham; Crosskeys Silver; Cwmtawe; Easingwold Town; Hemel Hempstead; Linthwaite; Nailsworth Silver; Pangbourne & District; Spennymoor Town; Skelmersdale Prize; Tewkesbury Town; Trentham.
Result: Top 3 bands 1st. Nailsworth Silver (Anri Adachi); 2nd. Skelmersdale Prize (Ben Coulson); 3rd. Crosskeys Silver (Sion Jones).
Welsh bands: Crosskeys were third, conducted by Sion Rhys Jones; Cwmtawe, conducted by Wayne Pedrick, were 10th.
First Section: 14 Bands. Test piece – “Connotations” by Edward Gregson.
Adjudicators: Alan Morrison, Steve Sykes (who had to withdraw at the last moment), Sheona Wade.
Competing bands: Blackburn & Darwen; Brunel; BTM; Jackfield; Kingdom Brass; Knottingly Silver; Medway; Newstead; Ripon City; Robert’s Bakery; Sandhurst Silver; Tylorstown; Unite The Union; York Railway Institute.
Result: Top 3 bands 1st. Kingdom Brass (Ian Porthouse); 2nd. Sandhurst Silver (David Johnson): 3rd. Medway (Nigel Taken).
Welsh bands: BTM ( Jeff Hutcherson) 14th. and Tylorstown (Gary Davies) 7th.
Third Section: 16 bands. Test piece – “Kaleidoscope; Five Variations on the ‘Brugg Song”, by Philip Sparke.
Adjudicators: Alan Bourne, Mark Wilkinson, Glyn Williams.
Competing bands Beaumaris; Chichester City; Gosport Solent; Hazel Grove; Kippax; Langholm Town; Lofthouse 2000; Lostock Hall Memorial; Ocean Brass; Olney; Pilling Jubilee Silver; Poole Borough; Raunds Temperance; Stamford; Tewit Silver; Usk.
Result: Top 3 bands 1st. Tewit Silver (Martin Hall) 2nd. Beaumaris (Clive Zwanswiniski). 3rd. Raunds Temperance ( Jonathan Pippen).
Welsh bands: Beaumaris were second conducted by Clive Zwanswiniski and Usk Band conducted, by James Jones, were 8th.
Second Section: 17 bands. Test piece – “Lions of Legends” by Thierry Deleruyelle.
Adjudicators: Nicholas Garman, Steve Pritchard-Jones, David Hirst.
