● Laleston Gardening Club: The past 18 months have proved very difficult for all organisations and Laleston Gardening Club is no exception.

Forward planning has been a nightmare due to uncertainty about the Covid situation and members will rightly wonder about the year ahead.

Sue Ford, the Club’s Chairman, has been mindful of this and throughout the pandemic has produced a series of newsletters which have kept members in touch with any developments at Cliff Cottage.

An informative newsletter has recently been produced by Sue and has been distributed to all members either electronically, by post or by hand.

The newsletter broached the subject of the ever increasing number of members of Laleston Gardening Club, some 220 members having enlisted or rejoined last year and over 150 in the early stages of this current membership year (Sept 2021 - Sept 2022).

Although it is a good problem to have, the Club doesn’t have the capacity to cope with excessive numbers when it comes to functions, trips, lectures, etc.

For insurance purposes, the capacity of the hall is 60, but Covid restrictions demand we lower this to smaller groups.

Consequently, and with regret, the Committee has decided that the Club will have to close its membership book in the near future.

Full details are included in the newsletter, but this is a reminder that time is of the essence for those wishing to renew or take up membership.

Any decision on a date to close the membership book will be communicated through the usual channels.

Another topic covered in the newsletter is the measures that have to be taken by the Club to provide the level of ventilation that will be needed to hold meetings and lectures in the hall while complying with Covid regulations.

Sue has researched the matter and established the Club needs to have windows in the main hall that open and supply fresh air, preferably a medical standard air purifier and a CO2 monitor to ensure the air quality is safe.

Funding grants are being sought at the moment to supplement Club funds to put these things in place. Without these measures it will not be possible to use the hall during the winter months.

On a brighter note, a Covidcompliant Christmas Fayre Fundraiser is planned for the November 13 following the same format as last year.

Our President, Margaret Worgan, has made provisional inquiries regarding a venue for a Christmas Dinner, details to follow later.

The newsletter stressed the importance of the forthcoming AGM. Last year there was no AGM, only end of year reports. This year the AGM is scheduled for Friday, October 8.

It will take place at 7.30pm, but there will be a limit on numbers able to attend so anyone wishing to attend is asked to contact Sue Ford as soon as possible.

The newsletter concluded with a sincere thank you to the membership for their support and forbearance during these difficult times.

● Penyfai Remembered: My report published in the September 30 edition of the Glamorgan Gazette, including going to the Pheasant field, is a snap shot of Penyfai village life for the tenant farmers of Penyfai and Court Colman and Aberkenfig.

I have a list of (The Estate) tenant farmers names Colonel William Herbert Clydwyn Llewellyn, his father and mother are related to me.

I have my tree confirmed by Mrs Jenny Newman genealogist.

At Christmas time a brace of pheasant was sent from the Big

House Whitehall – there were fetes held in summer in the Big House grounds.

Colonel William Herbert Clydwyn Llewellyn liked to sit by the lake and do a spot of fishing and he always had a little dog with him.

I was with my mother, he called my mother Gwenny, he showed me and my mother the birds and where they were nesting in the wall by the lake.

It is true W H Cooke & Arkwright, Park Street, Bridgend, is in association with Alfred Savill and were running (The Estate) with Colonel William Herbert Clydwyn Llewellyn from 1952.

The tenant for life, The Dunraven Estate, Mr William Vincent Stuart

Corbett W H Cooke & Arkwright land agent and Mr Robert Watkin Stacey Knight was in charge of the tenant farmers in Court Coleman including Llangewedd Court Farm, Ton Gwyn and other farms in Court Colman, Aberkenfig and the Dunraven Estate Common land Penyfai.

Registered by the Glamorgan County Council, Mr William Vincent Stuart Corbett and Robert Watkin Stacey Knight were well known land agent for Dunraven Estate tenant farmers in Court Colman Penyfai, the Vale of Glamorgan and the Merthyr Mawr Estate.

My memories keep flooding back.

● Farmers’ Market Is Back: The Farmers Market is back in Griffin Park on the third Saturday of every month with all the usual stalls. And it opens to the general public from 9am-1pm.

The next Farmer’s Market will be held in Griffin Park on Saturday, October 23.

Porthcawlcivic Trust Society: I have just received notification that the Annual General Meeting is being held on Tuesday, October 20, at Trinity Church John street Porthcawl.

The committee work hard on our behalf and they deserve all the help they can get.

They fight BCBC every inch of the way on our behalf and most probably they are fighting the biggest battle since they were formed – Salt Lake and Sandy Bay.

Do we really need these extra houses when the facilities that exist are inadequate for the present population?

And who in their right mind would put forward a scheme with an Aldi Store as being something that will make Porthcawl a ‘destination point’? London Marathon: Brilliant to see it back again after the pandemic made it impossible to hold last year.

I know it’s usually held in April and not October but next year it will return to its original slot.

I sometimes think back to my childhood and as far as I can remember it seemed to me that the marathon was a race run by the same 10 men every four years and now everybody is doing it and we all know somebody who has.

This year there were 40,000 running in London alone and the same number doing it ‘virtually’ making the numbers in excess of 80,000 in all and every one had a medal and every one deserved it.

Just think of the vast sums of money raised for individual charities and the good that it does. Everybody in the race had a tale to tell and a memory in their mind of a mother, father, son or daughter.

Thank you all for your efforts and your kindness and thank you all who contributed and whose gifts made life easier for the likes of you and I.

And finally no, I’m not old enough to remember the 1908 Olympic Marathon, where Dorando Pietri was helped over the line because his legs gave in just yards from the finishing line and a well wisher helped him over those last few yards, only to find that Pietri was disqualified for being assisted.

It happens regularly these days because times and positions are not that important to the majority of runners in the ‘pack’.
