Porthcawl Music and Flower Festival:

-

The Committee of the PM&FS has announced that there will be a Queen's Platinum Jubilee Music and Flower Festival on June 3 and 4.

The Music and Flower Festival will take place on June 4 and as usual, the event will be held in All Saints' Church in Victoria Avenue and entry will be free. As an added incentive, the first 70 people through the door will get a free glass of ‘bubbly' with which to toast her Royal Highness.

Opening times and event times will be announced soon – watch this space.

The event on June 3 is for the benefit of the patrons and sponsors of the main event and to whom we are deeply indebted. These generous people will be entertained by the Porthcawl String Orchestra and by Roy Noble – the well known Welsh wit and raconteur. Anyone who would like to become a patron then please contact Jill Sweet on 07927 619 752.

The Porthcawl Music and Flower Festival is a non-profit making organisation that donate all profits to Charity. This year we will be donating money to the Morgannwg Endeavour Charitable Trust.

This is a new charity which will be launched at the Grove Golf Club, South Cornelly on Friday, March

11, to share the good news of their work to date and what is happening regarding the Dialysis Service and Units proposed for the Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot areas.

The event is open from 12.30pm 4pm and they would be delighted to welcome you at the event. Please RSVP to: major131@btinternet.com .

The aim of the Trust is to improve treatment for renal patients in the Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot areas.

The Health Board want to get the voices of both renal patients and carers heard so that they can properly shape the requirements from the perspective of a patient who uses the service regularly.

They would also like to hear from you if you have any queries or concerns. Please contact them directly on sbu.renal@wales.nhs. uk or telephone 01792 986780. Your message will be picked up by the Renal Team who will be able to contact you directly.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee: Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne on 6th February 1951 following the death of her father King George VI.

The great celebration and Coronation did not happen until

June 2nd 1953, and that was a real celebration. The war was over and the country was getting its act together.

People bought their first television set and gathered in each other's houses to watch the spectacle.

There were street parties and dancing in public parks. People travelled up to London and queued all night to get a good viewing point.

And me? I was in Egypt in the Canal Zone listening to it on the wireless and then watching a flypast at RAF Fanara.

There was a big parade in the garrison town of Moascah – but because a group of us had only arrived from Blighty two days before and our knees weren't brown, we were not allowed to join the parade.

My parents had travelled up to London, having been invited to the coronation as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Wales and they had seats opposite Westminster Abbey and my brother and sister in law watched from The Mall.

There is already a committee in existence and over the next few weeks, there will be information coming out about the town celebrations and how you can get involved.

Let me know what you did back in 1953. What did you do? What happened in Porthcawl? If you are of a certain age and can remember anything, then please get in touch. Perhaps the town can emulate them this time around.

I have done some research and found some photographs and it would be interesting to find out if any of the children in the photographs are still with us. I will try and get them printed in the Gazette or in the Museum so that you can see them.

If your street is organising a street party, then let me know: or if your organisation is holding an event then again, let me know and we can promote it for you.

It will help us get an overall picture of what is happening in Porthcawl.
