New business venture for suspended Webb

- DYLAN JAMES newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

RHYS Webb has started a new business called RW9 Performance as he remains suspended from rugby.

The former Wales international, who is from Bridgend, is currently barred from playing, after being provisionally suspended following a positive drugs test for growth hormone back in August.

This happened shortly after joining his new club Biarritz, a French Pro D2 outfit. The former British and Irish Lion tested positive for a synthetic growth hormone after a check by the French Anti-Doping Agency carried out in July.

The Welshman could face a careerending four-year ban if he is found guilty. Webb is protesting his innocence and the investigation is currently ongoing. The player is yet to comment publicly on the issue.

The 34-year-old scrum-half retired from international rugby in May, despite being named in the training squad for the Rugby World Cup.

Almost five months on from his exit from the Test arena, Webb has announced RW9 Performance as doubt surrounds his playing career.

It’s described as “small group training” with the aim of providing the skills and knowledge to train like a professional rugby player “in a fun and enjoyable environment”.

Specific training plans have been tailored for a number of different age groups, ranging from under-eights all the way up to youth rugby.

Writing on the new Instagram page, Webb explained exactly why he’s started this new venture, having recently achieved his Level Three Strength & Conditioning qualification: “Throughout my career as a rugby player, I have always been passionate about strength and conditioning and the key role it plays in a player’s performance,” he said.

“And I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to work with some of the world’s best coaches.

“As a father to three young boys, whom I have coached from the start of their rugby-playing journeys, I have been lucky enough able to work closely with each of them, and their teams, to help them develop. It is from my passion of coaching my own sons that this idea stemmed.

“RW9 Performance has been designed to give you the skills, knowledge and foundation to help you train like a professional, in a fun and enjoyable environment.”

Webb and business partner Luke Griffiths released a joint statement when announcing the business, saying: “We believe there is a huge gap in the development of our future athletes and feel with the right guidance and structure we can help them reach their full potential.”
