Mynydd Cynffig WI: This month, we were in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill, at the usual time from 2pm-4pm, with dry weather and we were talking and laughing as normal.

We had a talk from the Dogs Trust – a lovely lady who fetched her little gold coloured spaniel with her, we were entertained by her antics (the dog I mean) and we were surprised by how much the Dogs Trust do from rescuing dogs to training dogs and helping owners to do the best for their animals.

Next month our speaker is from the Community Police we are looking forward to it.

We discussed WI business and laid plans for Christmas it will soon be here and we want to make it as special as possible for our members.

Our clubs are ongoing and enjoyed by all.

01656 657846 Marilyn James – A Celebration:

A celebration of Marilyn James’ life was held at Corntown Cricket Club last weekend attended by approx.100 family and friends.

Sadly Marilyn passed away quietly at home last month in Heol y Bardd with husband Mel after bravely suffering ill health for some time.

The celebration party was her wish and a narrative of her mum’s life, happy family film show followed by a superb buffet which was organised by daughter Jo with the help of supportive friends.

Marilyn will be sorely missed by Mel, children and many friends but her final wish was granted.

The barbers shop was situated in Wyndham Street for decades but has now moved to new premises on Nolton Street and such was the quality of the refurbishment that the Bridgend Civic Trust felt it worthy of receiving a Certificate of Recognition.

Natalie Murphy, Rob Hathaway and Neil and Valerie Jenkins presented the certificate to Christian Ashong (owner) and Mark Florence (manager) who were wished every continued success as one of the longest running family businesses in Bridgend town centre.

Laleston Gardening Club: Since the end of September there has been a great deal of activity at Laleston Gardening Club.

There has been much for the Club to organise, with Chairman Sue at the heart of everything that takes place at Cliff Cottage.

September ended with the traditional Harvest Supper which was a great success. Then there was the Ladies Section AGM on October 3 with 34 members present.

In contrast the main Club AGM held on October 6 was poorly attended with only one member Mr Malcolm Guildford attending other than Committee members.

Malcolm had been asked to attend as it had been proposed that he be elected onto the Committee. He was voted onto the Committee unanimously, as Malcolm has already proved to be a very loyal, helpful and popular member of the Club. The other members of the Committee were re-elected en bloc.

On the following day Saturday, October 7 The Macmillan Coffee Morning took place.

This raised just over £1,000 for the charity and Margaret Worgan, President thanked all those who had contributed.

Two days later on October 9, the first lecture of the new program took place when Alan Bush aided by John Hawking gave a very interesting and illustrated lecture on the production of year round chrysanthemums.

Given the fact that so much has been happening in such a short space of time, Sue has proposed that some of theses dates will be moved next year to ease the congestion.

After considering what has already taken place the October Committee meeting then turned their attention to forward planning.

Of particular importance was the date of the Tatton Park trip in July 2024. Due to an error by the booking agent, the proposed trip had been booked on the wrong date, there being no show on July 22.

Thanks to Sue and Margaret the trip has now been rearranged for departure on Thursday, July 18, with an overnight stay in a different hotel and a visit to the show on Friday, July 19. All other details remain the same.

So far no-one has backed out as a result of the change and there are six places still available to book.

Plans are at an advanced stage for the Christmas Fayre on Saturday, November 11.

Sian has proposed that it is time the ‘old guard’ could step back somewhat and introduce some of the newer members to take over some of the key roles in the staging of this event. It was agreed that some newer members should now be approached to participate.

Chairman Sue is in the process of compiling a quiz for the Quiz & Social evening planned for November 13. The catering team will provide refreshments and it’s sure to be an enjoyable evening.

The catering team (Sue, Sian and Linda) have now been joined by Lucy & Heather and on December 9 they will be involved in one of their most ambitious projects so far – providing a Christmas Dinner to a full house at Cliff Cottage.

All the culinary events held this year have received rave reviews, so Christmas 2023 should be no exception.

We are hoping to have news soon of the installation date for the last four sash windows from our supplier Acacia Joinery of Bridgend. The £3,000 grant received from Suncredit Solar Project via BAVO was used to pay the deposit on these windows.

The balance will be paid from our

Club Funds on completion.

The whole window replacement project has totalled £20,000. Some £10,000 was granted from the National Lottery Community Fund and that added to the previously mentioned £3,000 has meant the £7,000 balance has been funded by the Club itself through our fundraising activities, something Chairman Sue said we should all be very proud of.

Membership subscriptions for 2023/24 are now due and it is hoped that members old and new will continue to enjoy what Laleston Gardening Club has to offer.

Bereavement Friendship Group: The Bereavement friendship group meet at Bridgend Carers Centre, Park
