Spin doctor leading new keep fit class

- By HANNAH RODGER

A HOSPITAL medic is urging people to take up more exercise to reduce illness and stop them coming to her for treatment.

Ashley Monaghan, a qualified fitness instructor and j unior doctor, is helping to lead new fitness classes at a Barrhead leisure centre.

The 25-year-old is hoping locals take part in the spin classes at Barrhead Foundry’s new studio to help them stay fit and health and cut down on trips to the doctor.

The sessions, involving stationary bikes, help improve fitness through cardiovascular exercise.

Ashley, from Barrhead, will be one of several fully qualified instructors leading the classes at the facility run by East Renfrew Culture and Leisure.

The sessions will run six times a week, however frequency may increase if demand requires.

Ashley said: “I really do hope that one day I can put myself out of a job as a doctor by getting lots of people fit and healthy so they don’t become ill and need hospital treatment.”

The junior doctor has worked in cardiology units but is currently based at University Hospital Crosshouse, Kilmarnock.

She said: “Spin is a brilliant cardio workout, especially for people who can’t do high impact classes. It i mproves your metabolic rate and makes you burn lots of calories.

“It’s an exercise class that gets you fitter and stronger faster compared to other forms of exercise.

“And because it incorporates high intensity interval training, you also continue to burn calories for up to 24 hours after your spin session.”

Ashley said people of “all abilities and ages” have attended her classes, including a 91-year-old man.

East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure chief executive, Anthony McReavy said: “Our aim is to encourage people to become fit and healthy and we want to give them the facilities and opportunities to do just that.”
