Mascot buddies celebrate £20,000 hospice donation

- By HANNAH RODGER

TWO mascots forged a new friendship while celebrating a cash boost for a city hospice.

Harvey the Hospice Heart and Zingy, the face of EDF energy, met at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

The energy firm has donated £20,000 from its Scottish Charities Fund to the hospice’s £21million Evening Times-backed Brick by Brick appeal.

All the cash raised through the appeal is to be put towards building a new home for Glasgow’s hospice, which helps people at the end of their lives.

The new facility at Bellahouston Park is under construction and expected to be able to accommodate patients by 2018.

Glasgow City Council donated the site to the hospice to allow for construction of the purpose-built facility,

It will offer more patient beds and a wider range of services for day service patients, families and carers.

Young people above the age of 16 will also be able to receive high-quality care from specially trained staff at the facility, and the hospice will be one of the first in Scotland to transition young people from children’s to adult services.

Heather Manson, director of fundraising at the hospice said: “After five years of fundraising, this is such an exciting time for us as we see the new hospice being built at Bellahouston Park.

“But we still have to raise £1.45m to reach our target, so this donation makes a massive difference.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the support from EDF Energy, this is a fantastic contribution to the Brick by Brick Appeal.”

Paul Winkle, EDF Energy’s Scottish business director said: “Over the past year EDF Energy has given more than £100,000 to charities and groups near our bases at Hunterston, Torness and East Kilbride, so I am delighted to be able to donate £20,000 from our Scottish Charity Fund to The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice’s Brick by Brick Appeal.

“The care and support the hospice gives to patients and their families in the Glasgow area is outstanding.

“Many of us will know the challenges that have to be faced when a loved one is affected by a life-limiting illness.

“It is vital that services like this one are able to go on providing that help for years to come.”
