Plans to scrap parking permits welcomed

-

CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed plans by Glasgow’s SNP group to scrap controversial parking charges near the city’s newest hospital.

As revealed by the Evening Times, the party has vowed to abolish plans to introduce permits for residents living near the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital if they win control of the council in May’s elections.

Activists from the G51 Free Parking group, which has campaigned against the council’s plans to bring in charges for residents for years, have praised the party’s pledge.

Lisa Devlin, one of the group’s organisers, said further discussions will be needed to make sure local’s views and needs are taken into consideration.

She said: “The G51 Group welcomes the fact that the SNP are willing to abolish the parking charges that Glasgow City Council are trying to implement in our area due to the new hospital.

“It not only comes down to the charges but also certain restrictions that the residents and businesses will face too, therefore new talks will need to take place in order to reiterate our needs.

“As it is an election year, the Group welcomes any help from any elected members regarding this issue.

“I’m sure residents and local businesses will welcome Councillor Dornan making this statement, but we look forward to getting more details.”
